I'm at work, it's a slow day, and my thoughts are wandering.
If I had the money to buy another bike (hee hee hee), I think this sounds like a cool winter commuter bike (baring in mind that I still don't know all the ins and outs about cool bike parts):
Surly Karate Monkey with 2.0" studded, knobby tires;
disc brakes; an
internal geared hub in the rear; a
dynamo hub in the front; dynamo lights mounted on; drop handlebars; platform pedals; fenders; rear rack. Not sure what kind of shifters ... bar end, downtube, or brake lever?
Super sweet.
Winters like the last one - you know, where it snowed for only a handful of days - make me feel like my Cross Check rest-of-the-year-commuter is fine, but winters like this one where I've sometimes been battling through deep slush or wet snow make me think about how nice a special bike built up just for winter-time commuting would be.
I love my derailleur during the rest of the year, but not having to clean the snow off of it, and wondering what kind of extra wear this nasty weather is putting on it sounds kind of nice. And the 35mm tires run on the skinny side of passable for getting around on the snow.
