So, as my first post in my new journal, I'm gonna start with a fanmix I've been preparing ever since I've watched X-Men: First Class -- which means, since about June. The problems with my fanmixes is that I'm really, REALLY, picky.
FANMIX - Charles/Erik - Happiness
So, if you bear with me for a while, I'm gonna explain the idea behind this fanmix. (If you don't wanna read it, just scroll down.)
Most portrayals of Charles and Erik's relationship, be it in fanfiction or fanmix or otherwise, show Erik as the reluctant member of the relationship, the one who is always wondering whether he should leave, the one who knows the relationship can't last. Now, after watching X-Men: First Class for the second time (during the first time, I was too busy thinking, 'oh, Charles, you love him, but he doesn't love you back/look, Charles, he definitely doesn't love you back/oh, damn, that's how you got crippled - wait, what? ...I guess he does love you back.'), I reavailed my vision of the ship and I realized that, in my interpretation, people are getting it backwards.
I think that Charles is a person who has never allowed himself such depth of feeling; he is okay with friendship, he is okay with his sibling relationship to Raven, but head-over-heels love? It's kind of dangerous for him. He is, in my opinion, a person who has avoided a lot of things in life, for fear of his telepathy and how it might affect or erase the free will of the other person. Love, especially such a strong, passionate love, is a very scary experience for him. Besides, he's seen Erik's mind, knows that Erik's dogmas are set in stone, and knows that eventually, their beliefs will clash against one another. He cannot help but hope to convince Erik of the error of his ways, but it's just this: hope.
Now, while Erik might be more closed to relationships at first, he has never experienced such feelings or the need to deny them. In my head, Erik is, in the beginning of the film, a kamikaze; his world consists of Shaw, his mission is to get revenge on Shaw, and he has fully accepted the high possibility of an early death - he has never looked to the future beyond killing Shaw. Charles's entrance in his life turns his world upside down; he gives Erik a sense of self, leads him to value his life more, and shows the possibility of a better future, one in which they work together and mutants aren't despised for what they are. Now, Erik is not a person that lies to himself, especially about his feelings; when he's in it, he is in it. His reaction when Charles, at last, tells him that they do not want the same thing, is a bit surprised, and very heartbroken: I think that Erik thought that Charles's liking of humans was due to him not having contact with the despicable humans in the world, and he never really considered that Charles might not want to be with him in the end.
I chose twelve songs (six for each) that represent six different moments in their relationship, and one bonus song that kind of represents their relationship as a whole. So, thirteen tracks. Please let me know what you think about it!
MEETING EACH OTHER:
Our Lives | The Calling (Charles)
See the truth all around
Our faith can be broken
And our hands can be bound
But open your heart
And fill up the emptiness
With nothing to stop us
Is it not worth the risk?
Crawling in the Dark | Hoobastank (Erik)
Show me what it's for
Make me understand it
I've been crawling in the dark
Looking for the answer
Is there something more
Than what I've been handed?
I've been crawling in the dark
Looking for the answer
(Our Lives is a song about valuing your own life, and it's all enthusiastic like Charles is. Crawling in the Dark is, well, darker (duh, really?), fitting Erik's mood better, and showing how much his world has been shaken by this possibility of a future other than death in his mission.)
FALLING IN LOVE:
Eclipsed | Evans Blue (Charles)
We love our tragedies
We're both broken in our own little ways
We're broken and we fit together just right
You know I saw the black inside your eyes
I saw they were eclipsed and benign
And they look just right
Warmer Climate | Snow Patrol (Erik)
Tell me if I'm going crazy
But everything you said amazed me
Seems too easy on the ear to
Be something I should adhere to
You told me to simply wander
Rather than take shelter under
And open my heart to the thought that
Life is not just something you're caught at
(Eclipsed is a bit of a confused song; in this fanmix, it shows how Charles is totally in love with Erik, but how afraid he is of this feeling. he fears Erik's rejection, and he fears that his telepathy might unconsciously play a part in their relationship (When our lights meet, will you love me then? And will you even know it?) Erik's song, on the other hand, shows that he is still a bit distrustful, but how he is slowly acdepting this fact, and about to dive into it, not holding back.)
BEING IN A RELATIONSHIP (HEAD OVER HEELS):
Chasing Cars | Snow Patrol (Charles)
If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?
Only Hope | Switchfoot (Erik)
Sing to me of the song of the stars
Of your galaxy dancing and laughing and laughing again
When you feel like my dreams are so far
Sing to me of the plans that you have for me over again
And I lay my head back down
And I lift my hands and
Pray to be only yours
I pray to be only yours
I know now you're my only hope
(Now, these songs show how Charles and Erik view their relationship. Chasing Cars is a song with a theme of escaping reality, forgetting the world; Charles really, really loves Erik, but he can only allow himself to have hope when he is in fantasizing mode. Only Hope is a really cute song, but, in here, it enters with a darker interpretation: I think Erik has figured out that, with Charles's help, he can beat Shaw and live to tell the tale, and to have a happy life with his love. Charles is, then, his only hope of a future.)
CLASH OF BELIEFS (OR, THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE TWO OF US):
Don't Go Away | Oasis (Charles)
Me and you, what's going on?
All we seem to know is how to show
The feelings that are wrong
So don't go away
Say what you'll say
Say that you'll stay
Forever and a day
In the time of my life
'Cause I need more time
Yes, I need more time
Just to make things right
Bigger than Us | White Lies (Erik)
You took the tunnel route home
You've never taken that way with me before
Did you feel the need for change?
Apologies on your fingernails
Love flickered in the city of lights
Like intermittent radio waves
(These songs show how Erik and Charles view their falling out differently. Charles knows that Erik's beliefs are very different than his; he is aware of the strain in their relationship, and asks Erik not to go away - he cannot help but hope to fix their relationship. Erik is also aware of the strain in their relationship, but he blames it all on Charles's insistence on not changing, on believing that the world will have a place for them even if they don't fight for it. Bigger than Us is a sort of impatient song; Erik doesn't want Charles's tears, Charles's arguments or Charles's love: he wants Charles to realize that the fight they are about to engage in is bigger than the two of them.)
THE BEACH:
Disintegration | Jimmy Eat World (Charles)
Wonder why I'm so caught off-guard when we kiss
Rather live my life in regret than do this
What happened to the love we both knew, we both chased?
Hanging on a cigarette, you need me, you'll burn me
You'll burn me
Say Goodbye | Skillet (Erik)
Don’t say goodbye
‘Cause I don’t wanna hear those words tonight
‘Cause maybe it’s not the end for you and I
And although we knew
This time would come for me and you
Don’t say anything tonight
If you’re gonna say goodbye
(Again, how their views of the relationship are different: for Charles, their separation is an event he has been waiting for, and he is bitter about it; for Erik, it comes off as a surprise, and he is the one that pleads for Charles to be with him.)
POST-DIVORCE:
Hesitate | Stone Sour (Charles)
'Cause I see you
But I don't feel you
Anymore
So go away
I need you
But I can't need you
Anymore
You hesitate
Here Is Gone | Goo Goo Dolls (Erik)
And we wake up in the breakdown
Of the things we never thought we could be
(In the end, they're both aware they can't have these feelings anymore, and are trying to get rid of it. Unsuccesfully, of course.)
BONUS SONG:
Happiness | The Fray (both)
Happiness damn near destroys you
Breaks your faith to pieces on the floor
So you tell yourself, that's enough for now
But happiness has a violent roar
(Happiness is a very dangerous thing, that leaves deep marks. They might try to move on past what they had, but the fact that they were once happy together cannot ever be forgotten.)
