(FANMIX) Star Trek: The Original Series - The Enterprise's Mission - There's Something about Blue

Apr 03, 2013 00:51

Coming over with another fanmix! This one is for the waywardmixes challenge #14: Journeys. As soon as I read the theme, the Enterprise started flying around my head, and I knew I had to try. This mix was surprisingly easy to organize! I suppose that, when you're not focusing on character specifics, it becomes easier. Hopefully it's an okay mix!

There's Something about Blue - The Enterprise's Mission - A Star Trek: The Original Series Fanmix

About why I chose the Enterprise's Mission:
There are several journeys in fiction that I like (when reflecting about the theme, I had a lot of metaphorical journeys in mind, and this mix almost became a Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE mix), but this is the one journey that stands out to me as THE journey. It's so long, and it made such a difference in History (in the real world as well as in the Trek Verse), and, even forty years later, we can still see its impact not only on science fiction, but on all of pop culture. It was a groundbreaking, visionary TV show; I love Star Trek, and, really, there could have been no other choice for me.

About Star Trek:
I highly doubt there is a person with internet connection that doesn't know what Star Trek is, but let's suppose there is: Star Trek is a long-running science fiction franchise. It spawned five live-action television series -- The Original Series, The Next Generation, Voyager, Deep Space Nine and Enterprise --, eleven movies (going on twelve), and one animated adaptation, as well as a lot of books, comic books and videogames (not all of them considered canon). The stories are usually centered on a crew working under Starfleet, the starship fleet of an Earth-based interstellar government named the United Federation of Planets.

The Original Series is the first of those series; its three seasons ran from 1966 to 1969. We follow the crew of the starship Enterprise (NCC-1701), who explore space, its mysteries, its beauty and its ugliness (and its extremely ridiculous stuff), coming to know more about humanity and themselves in the process. Or, as Captain James T. Kirk puts it (so much better than me):

"Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds; to seek out new life and new civilizations; to boldly go where no man has gone before."

This mix is about that mission.

I have often dreamed of a far-off place
Where a hero's welcome would be waiting for me

I'm going home
Back to the place where I belong
Where your love has always been enough for me
I'm not running from
No, I think you've got me all wrong
I don't regret this life I chose for me
But these places and faces are getting old
So I'm going home
Well, I'm going home

(The longing for home: the anxiety of returning after a long time, the longing for familiar faces and arms.)

Home | Midnight Oil feat. Emmylou Harris
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPtuHUpdQ5I)

Where is home?
Where is my home?
  I've searched far and wide
Where is home?
Where is my home?
I hear my spirit cry

It's in the clear blue sky

(The feeling of displacement: not belonging to one's home, on one's planet, not belonging anywhere but to the journey.)

The Ballad of Serenity | Sonny Rhodes
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPwkDF5AxQM)

Take me out to the black
Tell 'em I ain't coming back
Burn the land and boil the sea
You can't take the sky from me

(The certainty: come what may, nothing can ever take away the experiences of the journey, or the person one has become.)

I would love some feedback! \o
