Sleep, oh how I have longed for thee.

I'm coming to the end of my journey.  After the mighty crash I really didn't think I'd get this finished (without it being a pile of tits), I could have done MUCH better given another 6 months but hey, whatcha gonna do?  For a weeks work it's pretty decent.  I still have the written work to do (which I'll do in the morning) but after a week of solid work I'm pretty much finished.  Currently rendering out some HD images then I'll set a camera track, render and head off to my bed (10 hours sleep out of the past 100, woo hoo!).  The assignment was to create a virtual environment, interior and exterior.  I gotta admit I practically haven't done an exterior but I put a lot of effort into the interior (in the lighting/texturing and dynamics side of things at least) and I think I came out of it okay, and learned an ASS LOAD of stuff.  As usual, I taught myself more in 7 days than Paisley Uni has in 4 years.  True story.

I'm pretty comfortable with dynamics now, which was my main focus for this project seeing as I knew I couldn't make up my grade with modelling/texturing due to my time constraints.  Not that I can make anything spectacular with dynamics but I now know what everything does and as Bry will attest to that's no mean feat at Paisley Uni.  Over the course of the week I made moving water with wake collision (like throwing pebbles in and the likes), fog, a moving flag (although I can't get the texture to constrain to the vertex, looks like something out of Zetsubou when it's animated) a pretty damn sweet fire and I was planning to make falling rocks that kicked up dust when they hit the ground (dule wielding particle effects!?  When I have time, I will master such a technique!).  I didn't use it all, but still.

I CANS LAYSOUTS YOURS UV'S!!!  It's only taken me four years but I finally 'get it'.  It's pretty tedious but when you get it right it's rather satisfying.  I also made my own textures this time around, giving it a lot more effort than I usually do.  Now time wouldn't let me spend much of itself on texturing but I did okay with what I had.  Oh, and seeing your entire seen dressed like a checkerboard is always fun.

I learned a shit load when it comes to lighting, again like everything else I really could have been doing with more time for it but I still managed to experiment with HDRI and various other lighting techniques.  3 point lighting John?  OH REALLY!?  It's 2009, Tekken 2 was a long time ago.  Oh, as my own personal pat on the back I actually 'finished' rendering my interior last night but the lighting made it look like a PS2 game so I didn't stand for it, done it all over again and it looks infinitely better.  Bravo me.

Learned a lot about NURBS modelling on the project that broke, I modelled the second project in a couple of hours, fuck all was to be learned.

My £1000 PC was money well spent, this baby has put up with my overloaded workstation and poly-heavy modelling without a hint of complaint. <3

I'm in good spirits just now, but if it fails the 'next morning' test then I'll cry.  With the 10% hit and the shoddy outdoors I don't know how far back this will pull my grade, my only new years resolution (and not a bullshitty one neither) is that I have to power into my 3D.  In this industry your grades don’t matter, but the quality of your work does.  The beauty is I now WANT to spend my free time modelling and such.  I've actually enjoyed these past few days.  Once I got over the overwhelming urge to  punch a baby I got the rush of a new project, and for 7 days it was my everything.  This really is what I want to do for a living and I'm gonna work ma baws off to get there.  Expect to see my 3D comic come the end of University bitches!

P.S.  I'll be going to Paisley tomorrow afternoon to hand this shite in, anyone want some company in the G-lands?  Be a shame to waste the fair.

ONE LOVE
