Birthday in Florence

Over the years I've come to not enjoy my birthday, so Kelsie seemed to make it his mission to ensure I had a great birthday this year - and I did!!

It was a busy weekend with 3 different art shows opening, so we decided to have my birthday party on Thursday instead of Friday. My favourite people in Florence showed up (aside from a few missing souls who couldn't make it) to celebrate with me - to thank them I feed them piles of food. I certainly got spoiled this year: earrings, new clothes, yummy vanilla smelling things, wine, delicious chocolate cookies, a book about slow food and a gift certificate for a massage. After a few hours of hanging out at our apartment we left to join Caitlyn at her art opening. We spent an hour or so admiring how great her work looked and then made our way to the restaurant. At first I was a little chapped our reservations had to be for 11:30pm (who besides my mother eats this late?) but then it worked out considering Caitlyn's opening ended up being this night. Since it was my birthday I got to pick the restaurant so of course I picked Acqua Al 2, so I could get my fileto aceto balsamico (balsamic vinegar steak). Just so everyone who has ever doubted my steak ordering habits I ordered it medium - not medium well or well, but medium. Yep, there was blood dripping on the plate and it was delicious. After being told to be quiet by one of the other waiters we decided we best head home (seeing as it was already pretty late).

The next morning I wrote my test in my Italian class (no, it did not go well) and then took off to book our flights. So we are officially heading to Barcelona on April 15, then we're flying to Lisbon on the 18th. After that my friend Liz treated me to a delicious birthday lunch at a Chinese restaurant. We couldn't stay long because she had to leave early, so I left to meet Kelsie, Caitlyn, Shannon and April for tea and cake where I got treated to dessert! By the evening I was exhausted, but still managed to pull myself together for April's show opening at Dolce Zucchero. This is a club that lots of people go to here, but I haven't been to yet. I was surprisingly impressed with how clean it was - I was expecting it to look like the Palace or the Dome in Halifax (with cages and hot tubs everywhere). April's work looked great there. It seemed to fit the ambience perfectly. So even though I was tired we somehow managed to stay until 3 in the morning dancing up a storm. Just as we were leaving I got a call from my step-daddy Don to wish me a happy birthday (sorry about that) and when we got home my mom called also (again, sorry).

Needless to say Saturday was a write-off until we met Shannon to see her show opening. We spent a few hours chatting surrounded by her lovely paintings. I had a good time but was losing momentum to stay awake by the end of it. Kelsie and I headed home to finish off the great birthday weekend with a bag of chips. All in all, the best birthday ever.
