My advanced standing

I'm officially in "advanced Italian". According to my friend Liz's dictionary there is only one more tense for us to learn. I don't believe that though, because I've definitely seen two that I don't understand. The good news is I can communicate beyond a basic level (apparently). I still feel that the "basics" I should know I struggle with, but I'm trying. I can communicate with old ladies at the grocery store too! Last week a cute woman was behind me and kept smiling at me and then asked me for my opinion on her tupperware she was buying. She wanted to know whether or not I thought it was microwaveable. I told her that the little symbol of a microwave on the front generally means its okay to put in there, but not to put it in the oven. She then proceeded to thank me and pat my cheeks.

It reminded me of how when I was little (6 years old) and we were living in Indonesia the locals would always pinch my cheeks. My parents said it was because they weren't used to seeing white people and wanted to test our skin to see if it was real. I wonder if the truth is that there is an invisible sign on my face that says "pinch me"? I wonder this because Italians are generally white - so why pinch my cheeks? I find it endearing so it doesn't bother me. Just a curiosity of mine.....

This saturday my friend Peter is coming to visit us all the way from O'Leary, Prince Edward Island!
