Kelsie and I went to an art show in Florence called Donna/Donne (that's Woman/Women), the content being either about women or by women.
I realized that I'm a very traditional person when it comes to art. To me, art is a sculpture, drawing or a painting, possibly even a video. It is NOT a room decorated with scarves and shoes strewn about the floor. I like abstract art too, as long as it is painted with paint (not something like blood or elephant dung).
Actually, I kind of take that back. There was one piece that was really cool and it had chunks of elephant feces on it. There was a beautiful piece that was a model of a black woman that had beads sewn on all over it as her clothing. When you first walked in there were two giant statues of women - I wish Kelsie and I were rich and had a giant house because I'd buy them and put them on our front lawn. Or maybe in our backyard as a giant jungle gym.
There was a really interesting video called Here Comes Santa that had two women stepping on Christmas ornaments - in my opinion a statement on women's roles in Christmas (read The Christmas Imperative), which I learned about in some class I took once upon a time.
But back to weird contemporary art.... picture this: a beautiful old wooden table with a bag sitting beside it,and coming out of the bag is fake hair.
That's what I spent two hours looking at. That, and a video of a woman flagellating herself. That's not art my friends, that's self-inflicted abuse and people get professional help for that sort of thing!
