Spoooooooooooooooooooooooks! (6x07)
Squeeing about my Favourite British Show (yes, I do have to rate it higher than Doctor Who, sorry Doctor!) is that it gets its suspension of disbelief just right. While storylines are obviously exagerrated for dramtic purposes, they are rooted in enough reality to make the threats genuinely believable. Add to that the avoidance of giving lead characters the "Jack Bauer" factor of terminator-like guranteed success (people actually die), and the balance is just... right.
I remember watching the very first episode the very first time it aired, purely on having seen a single trailer for me. It looked that awesome, and it bloody well was. Over almost six years the show has evolved and developed from it's early days of classic standalone missions (which are still endlessly rewatchable) into the very definition of what I love about serialised drama. For the last couple of years I have been hoping and wishing that they would run a solid story over more than two episodes, and I am so happy to have gotten my wish. I have no idea if a 7th season has beeen commisioned, but I truly hope so, because judging on the standard set this winter, I have faith that they could take it even further (I am thinking in terms of character arcs beginning and ending, but don't wanna get into speculative details).
I think that the main reason that I have not overtly pimped or coerced many of many American friends to check out Spooks is twofold. Primarily I think I fear that, due to the very "British" pseudo-political nature of the show, I worry that they might not be so deeply involved in some of the storylines (and I would love to hear feedback on this from the few of you that do watch). Secondly, I confess that I am a little scared when pimping it, because I f'ing love it so much and it would would be weird for me to reccommend it to someone and them not enjoy it. If that makes sense. :/
On the other hand, how many US shows have I checked out due to pimping from y'all? Ha!
