when reading a runic carving, you need to read it on multiple levels. The simple answer, translated to English, is a quote from the movie 'The Gangs of New York'... it was something that was spinning around in my head and seemed vaguely significant. It goes, "The blood stays on the blade." I may have carved 'in' rather than 'on', but the deeper reading only changes slightly, and the message is not lost.
One of my favourite way to read carvings is to take it letter by letter and examine the significance of each rune, in relation to those around it, and its place in the word. One good example word for this method is the word 'LOVE'. L means Lake, which can represent a depth, usually emotional or of that ilk. O represents the home. V is a hugely debated and broadly significant letter, but the concept best represented by V here is 'help'. E means Horse, and that represent travel and/or communication, amongst other things. You put it it all together.

alternatively, you can translate phonetically, which is best when considering runic relations/significances. in which case, it would be spelled LUV, and U represents the Auroch - wild, untamed strength. Destructive, and the mythological beast of fire that mated with the cow of ice to create everything there is. I kind of like that, when you put LUV together in runic... "Love" means: Emotion; Wild but dangerous force; great help*.
Another fun word to translate/examine is BLOOD... Literally: New beginnings; emotional depth; home; home; Day. And again, in this one, the double-O can be replaced with a U, changing the 'home, home' to a 'untamed, destructive force'

*or giant/titan... or shapeshifting/shapeshifter... like I said, V has a lot of meanings. It's all about context, and the translators current paradigm,
