H50 Ep: Ma Lalo O Ka 'Ili

Wow, we've barely stopped talking about last week's ep and it's time for a new one already. Fortunately this week's ep was considerably less rage-inducing.

Did...did we just have a cargument? And Steve and Danny having a personal conversation as if they were actually friends? And a case that everyone worked on and made a contribution to? Excuse me for a moment...I think I need to have a little lie down.

It was nice to see the case as the A story again, and it was great that Five-0 actually had to work to figure it out instead of having every clue handed to them on a plate surrounded by giant neon arrows.

I also continue to like the scenes between Danny and his mom, even though I hate the trope that the kids can get together and magically fix their parents' marriage with one elaborate grand gesture. But Grace made an adorable server, even if Daddy won't let her open wine bottles by herself. The fist bump between Danny and Grace was adorable. The only sour note in the whole 'Danny being supportive of his mom while secretly plotting to reconcile his parents' thing for me was Danny coming home to drive his mom to her spa appointment and then set up the restaurant scene in his house while he was supposed to be looking for what Five-0 still thought was a kidnapped 16 year old girl. I get how devoted you are to your family, Danny, but geez. Priorities.

Even though I generally liked this episode--which is something I never thought I'd be able to say again after last week--I still have a couple of quibbles. The minor quibble is the general tendency of everyone in Danny's life to demand that he share every detail of his personal business all the time while offering nothing in return. Clara, you want to have a personal none-of-Danny's-business meeting? Fine, but you don't get to play the 'it's personal' card while simultaneously demanding to know what's in the boxes Danny just accepted delivery of. Steve has been doing the same thing for the entire time they've known each other.

Speaking of Steve and his issues, my major quibble is that he just let Jerry deeper into the whole Shelburne mess than he ever let his ohana. Like, ever. He never had general Shelburne brainstorming/investigation sessions with the rest of Five-0. They were only ever allowed to know the bits that pertained to open cases, or that they were unavoidably dragged into.

Oh, well. I guess the really mind-boggling thing is if Show can still produce episodes like this, why haven't they been all along?
