H50 Ep: Na Hala a Ka Makua

Hi, Danny! I've missed you!

It was so nice to see Danny and Steve spending time together again. Sadly, there wasn't as much banter as there could've been because Steve and Danny spent most of their time talking to the guy holding them hostage instead of to each other, but the scenes at the beginning and the end were cute.

I loved Steve pointing out that Grace was scrappy and hot-headed and loyal to a fault. Where could she have gotten that from? I'm not sure I buy Grace as hot-headed, though. We never see that in her on screen. I can totally see her politely asking the bully to leave her friend alone, then shrugging and punching him in the face because that's what her Danno would do.

I also loved the whole bit at the end where Steve asked Danny to make a drinks run with him and Danny's first response was 'Why? Do you need me to pay for it?' And then actually checking Steve's money to see if it was counterfeit because this is the first time Steve has ever paid for anything. What's next? Danny driving his own car? Have we even seen him drive the black Camaro yet?

Ultimately I'm not sure what to make of this episode, though. They seemed to be telling the wrong story, or at least telling the story the wrong way. I mean, was I really supposed to have any sympathy for Roy? So he missed his daughter's childhood and now she won't give him the time of day because she's made up her mind about the kind of man he really is. In the words of Bobby Singer from Supernatural, "Boo hoo, princess." The kind of man she made up her mind he really is, is exactly the kind of man he really is. He may not have committed this murder, but he spent his daughter's childhood in and out of prison for crimes he actually did commit because he's a career criminal. If he missed his daughter's childhood, it was due to his own actions.

And if Roy hadn't died and Five-0 was able to prove to a judge that he hadn't committed the murder, Roy still would've been going back to prison for escaping custody, attacking multiple police officers, kidnapping, carjacking, and probably a bunch of other things I could think of if I were actually a lawyer and not just a fangirl fangirling about her show.

I don't know. Either Roy needed to be a completely innocent dupe who was framed, or the emphasis of the episode needed to be on solving the crime, not on telling the sob story of poor Roy Parrish, who mostly made his own problems.
