Ahh, I didn't catch the joke with Anna and the wings on the Firebird. Good one!
Sam meeting and getting to know his parents was beautiful and heartbreaking. Hopefully it was also therapeutic for him, and will help him get past at least a little of the crap he's been carrying around.
I hope the closure Sam got from being able to apologize to his dad (sort of) is incorporated into his character development, not something that happened and was then forgotten about as sometimes happens. There have been some episodes where Dean seemed to make some forward progress with his issues, which were then seemingly ignored in future episodes.
"It's interesting that Michael, who is such a dedicated servant of God, doesn't really believe in the free will that God gave humans. Or does he? Was he just using the 'free will is an illusion because all of your choices lead to your destiny' argument to persuade Dean to say yes in the same manipulative and not-quite-lying way that Lucifer convinced Nick
( ... )
I don't think they see the full picture, so therefore, they can't see how destiny and free will fit into the same universe.
People have different opinions on destiny and free will, but the show seems to have spent a lot of time setting them up in opposition to each other: destiny (angels) vs. free will (humans). I think it would be an unsatisfying ending to the season if it turned out everything Sam and Dean have been through was for nothing because they're powerless to change anything.
I still think it can be comfort - Castiel is still watching over Dean and Michael's not going to let anything happen to his vessel that can't be fixed
Castiel watching over and protecting Dean (and now Sam) can be comforting, but knowing that Michael is only protecting Dean so he can use him later is less so.
I like your comment about Sam meeting THAT John for the first time. I didn't even think about it until you brought it up. But it is true - Dean remembers two different Johns, but Sam didn't.
That was interesting about the bloodlines also. I guess if Adam had lived, he technically could have been a vessel too, since he had John's blood, lol.

I've always wondered if that wasn't why Sam and Dean had such different relationships with their dad growing up. Dean knew there was more to John than the obsessed hunter, but Sam never knew him as anything else.

Ooh, good point. I wonder what kind of spanner it would have thrown in the works if Adam and John had lived, so there were three potential Michael vessels, not just one.
