Yeah, it's a pretty terrible situation. I can't really offer anything to this poor woman but sympathy. It is for reasons like these that I donate to charities that help folks like this get back on their feet.
That said, this story makes me sick. Not due of the content or the subject, but the horrific tear-jerker style in which it is written. If there ever was a case for activism and bias in the media, this is it. This story doesn't give facts. It doesn't offer clear and unbiased documentation of an event. It gives us a sob-story narrative, specifically designed to tug at the heartstrings and fashion sympathy for a victim of the ruthless, evil, cold and heartless system of capitalism in this country.
Just as easily, a straight story providing facts and real data could have been presented, and any reasonable person would have drawn the same conclusions. But no, CNN just had to go the extra mile.
I read the full story and then skimmed the comments. This guys sums up my initial take on the story rather succinctly:
"Of course [CNN] tries to do so by selecting a very specific case:
- Black (racism!)
- Female (sexism!)
- Mother (think about the children!)
- Outlandishly high security deposit (3 times a months rent??)"
