Higurashi no Naku Koro ni

It takes a lot to really freak me out.  I like scary movies, I like scaring people.  I love suspense.

I started watching Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and I am legitimately freaked out.

Freaked out.

Maybe because this series involves kids being creepy.  I can't stand it when kids are creepy.

But yeah, so I started watching Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni (whose name apparently means "When the Cicadas Cry" which is creepy now that I kinda know what it's a reference to...), and just finished the second episode.  I'm really enjoying it, despite being really freaked out.  What's happened so far:  This boy, Keiichi has been living in this rural town for about a month.  He befriends four girls, and becomes a part of their club where they play games.  All of them are pretty intense about the games, and the #2 rule of the club is to win by any means possible (which makes me pause for a minute :oP).  Keiichi seems to be pretty close to this one girl, Rena, and one day they are exploring these ruins of houses in this field and Rena discovers a doll she wants to uncover from underneath the rubble.

As Keiichi is helping, he discovers a murder occurred in the town, where a person was murdered, and chopped up or something.  One of their arms was never found.  At the end of episode 1 there's a wonderful narrator's part where Keiichi informs the watcher that if he had listened to the cicada's crying so loudly, perhaps he would have understood it as a warning to what was about to happen next.  (It's actually a really good part... I was like "omg... o_O" when I saw it for the first time :oP)

But in the second episode, you find out that every year on the night of this festival one person gets killed, another person goes missing, and you basically know by now that at least two of the girls (Rena and Mio) know something about it/are involved.  Keiichi is solicited by a police investigator to find out what he can about the village and to collect info to figure out who is behind the murders that have been occurring.

Except Rena knows about Keiichi's part in this police investigation, and she's not happy about it.  She's down right creepy about it, in fact, and flips out on Keiichi for a moment when he denies having met the policeman and says that the business with the policeman has nothing to do with her.  AND she was snooping outside of Keiichi's room and house listening to his convo with the cop.  AND the pupils of her eyes change to slits when she gets pissed off/the matter of the murders comes up.

So yeah... FREAKY!!!!  It's really interesting, and kinda freakin' me out, but I'm enjoying it. :oD

Part of me is wondering if these girls are just regular, albeit creepy, girls, or whether they are some spirit or other... hmmm... Let's watch and find out!

ps - Apparently a real-people movie was made from this... and... and... it doesn't look half bad.  Depending on how I like the series I might have to look up this movie :oP  and omg... an even creepier preview of the movie exists here.
