Supernatural 6.02 - Two and a Half Men...

First things first:  Oh my freakin’ God, it was great seeing Dean and Sam hunting again. Like, really really great.  I loved the Apocalypse, don’t get me wrong (I adored it). But seeing Dean and Sam getting their hunt on together was fabulous. I have no words. Even better? Seeing Dean and Sam’s shenanigans whilst shopping for Bobby John :oP They were so… old Dean and Sam, and I loved it.

Secondly: I just realized (psh, slow moment!)... BOBBY JOHN!!! As in... Bobby and John!!!! Who wanted to name the kid after Bobby, and who wanted to name him after John?!  Somebody knows the answer to that, right?!!

Thirdly:  For the first time ever I actually liked Lisa.  Like, I was cheering her on a little bit.  Which big step for me.  Throughout the episode you can see Dean struggling with trying to reconcile his desire to hunt and his need to stay and protect, but you see Lisa noticing him struggling, too.  And yeah, it was kinda cool to see her handling a gun, but the best?  When she basically spells it out for Dean at the end… Dean has to leave.  He’s not happy living the domestic life, and he’s driving Lisa and Ben to live the life of a hunter without the skills and the desire and the will to do so.  Lisa and Ben aren't meant for the hunting life, and Dean not letting go was making Lisa and Ben and Dean unhappy.  So, yay Lisa!  I liked how we saw her change from last episode where she wanted Dean to stay (so Ben could basically have a father), to this episode where she realizes that tying Dean down is not good for any of them.  *happy sigh*

Other things…

The Impala.  *fans self* Holy crap, Impala. Can you get any hotter?!  Opening scene after the credits? The one where Dean is looking over his hunting gear?  Tear jerker.  It was a gorgeous scene, bittersweet.  And yes, part of that was because it’s Dean and hunting. But the other part was because it’s Dean and the Impala.  Afterwards, I wanted a scene just between them, with the Impala parked on the side of a long stretch of highway, near a lake somewhere, with a beer in Dean’s hand as he leans against the hood. (And yes, I might want to write a short ficlet about this now :oP)  But the end scene?  Holy crap.  First of all, that scene was some of the best cinematography I’ve seen on Supernatural. <3!  Second of all…  DEAN LOOKIN’ FIERCE WITH HIS BABY!!! Oh, he’s so freakin’ happy to be back.  That was an awesome moment.  It’s just more proof that Dean can’t end up in anybody else’s arms except those of his baby. (And, well… maybe Cas's ;) teehee.)

Also, Smoke on the Water?

Bobby John. Seeing the boys with a baby was adorable. And I loved Dean humming Smoke on the Water… Rock and Roll lullabies ftw!  But yeah, my favorite part was seeing them scramble in the grocery store aisle, not sure of what to get or how to handle things (especially Dean practically turning the baby over to check for wet spots).  These are the boys we know, and I loved it.  I liked how Dean was paternal, and I get they had to throw some stuff in there about how domestic life changed Dean, but… eh, we already knew Dean was paternal (because of Sam and the flashbacks to their childhood), so at some points I was borderline rolling my eyes, simply because I almost want to say it was borderline trying to drill into the viewers that domestic life changed Dean because Lisa has a baby niece and Dean almost sees Ben as a son and yada yada yada. We get it, domestic life changed Dean, but writers, please don’t attribute all of Dean’s softer aspects to his one year of domestic living.  Dean's deeper and more complex than that.

The Campbells. Samuel: Again, don’t trust him.  The more I see of him, the more I’m settling more and more into my prediction that he’s gonna end up as some force that Dean and Sam have to reckon with, in a not-so-great way. And whoever he’s talking to at the end??  Who is that?! I’m hooked, it’s official. I love that angle… And… and… idk if this is spoilery or not?  So skip the rest of this paragraph if you’re really paranoid (though it’s not anything big)… I’m really wondering if whoever he’s talking to has something to do with the angels and what’s going on in that neck of the woods… y/n? *ponders*

Okay, the rest of the Campbells… the girl creeped me out this time. Ngl.  Idk, she just seems almost psychotic, but maybe that’s because we haven’t seen enough of her yet?  But Christian (aka JONAS QUINN!)… oh God, I love him. Yes, I’m partial to the actor, but really?  The part where he says to Dean, “We know what your specialty is” to Dean, referencing Dean’s torturing in Hell… OMG MY BREATH KINDA STOPPED. I loved that scene… maybe it’s the drama queen in me, maybe it’s the part of me that loves the angst that comes with Dean’s being in Hell, maybe it’s the me that just loves the fact that I both hate and love Christian’s character… idk, but that scene was great.  And that whole scene between Dean and the Campbells there?  Umm… I’ll write more on that later (because it deserves its own section). The Silent Bob dude… I kinda liked him. (And lol, Dean’s “you just go think at me” or whatever he said :oP). I’m sorry to see him go… I kinda liked what dynamic he threw into the Campbell Clan.  :o/

Okay, the family feud scene.  I loved this scene (the one where Dean and Samuel face off over the baby).  I loved how Dean finally pointed out that family doesn’t mean trust, that they need to earn trust, to Sam and then acted on that.  And Sam?  Sam seems to think he knows best, has known the Campbells, and you can basically tell that this is going to be a source of future conflict between the brothers (we’re getting a hint of it now) and may land Sam into some trouble in the future.  But I love the dynamic between Christian and Dean… they’re butting heads, but yet… idk, there’s still this fierce stubbornness in both of them that can either develop into a reluctant alliance between them, or a strong dissonance between them. And I’m liking both, whether they turn into allies or enemies.  But also, it was interesting what position Sam took in the faceoff.  Yes, it’s painful to see him siding with the Campbells (he seems to trust them more than he does Dean, in a way... and Sam!! You told the Campbells about Dean's time in Hell?!!), but it’s also… interesting.  I’m not gonna lie, I’m not opposed to it.  What was interesting was the way Sam was standing on the Campbell side of the standoff when Dean and Samuel were facing off.  And he’s both literally and symbolically the go between between Dean and the Campbells. I’m… intrigued.  I’m interested to see where this will go, and what lessons about family the boys will learn.

I might have already covered this, in some way, but… Dean.  Dean and trying to have a family and trying to hunt.  Dean and Sam’s words about how their father always said their situation was only temporary.  Dean and Sam’s, “How do you not turn into Dad?”  Part of me is like, “Really, Sam?” because Sam was the one, after all, who made Dean promise to go live his life in Suburbia and now he’s all like, “You can’t have that.” Hypocritical, to say the least, and he doesn’t seem to be owning up to that fact (just pointing out Dean’s faults for trying to fix things).  (But tbh, come on, I still think it was ooc for Sam to make Dean promise to go live with Lisa, anyway… maybe we’re finally getting what Real Sam would have thought if Dean had ever said, “I’m packing up and going to live a normal life, Sammy.” *shrugs*) But anyway… The other part of me really liked that moment because it was finally pointed out for Dean that what he was doing was something like his father, that he could turn into his father in not a short amount of time if things continued the way they were.  And I felt bad for Dean, I did, because he seriously looked a little broken there.  But it was a good moment, and then was followed up with Dean’s confession to Lisa at the end and Lisa telling Dean to go back to hunting (You go, girl!).

But… my view on Dean and domesticity? Or at least family life?  I think he still wants a family, but he’s beginning to realize (or, rather, he hasn’t yet realized but it’s in the works) that cookie cutter family life isn’t for him.  He can still have a family, but living a life with civilians is not for him.  And living the life with hardened hunters?  That’s not the life for him either.  So… where will Dean end up?  Who knows.  (Shippers!Moment: Dean and Cas, come on… MFEO…) I just hope he realizes at the end of the series that he can find a family of his own, one that isn’t easily defined or regular by any standards but still his family and still close and a family.

The Shapeshifter.  We finally get to see the Alphas they’ve been talking about!! And how the heck are the boys supposed to handle these guys?  (I have an idea, but… it’s spoilery so I’ll write another post about that :oP) That scene was fantastic, the fight scene between the hunters and the shapeshifter and then Dean and Sam in the panic room listening to the fight going on above.  I loved it.  (If this is any indication of the potential Awesome for next week’s episode and a certain angel’s return, I’m STOKED to the max.)

The soundtrack.  Yes, I have a short, tiny section for this.  I like the soundtrack for this new season.  The beginning soundtrack is kinda heartbreaking (we’ve heard this before? Or is it slightly-altered new?)  But then some of the soundtrack is altered but still the same (the one specifically when Dean and Sam are driving up to the shed with the Campbells), and I love it.  I’m just enjoying it all around, I guess.

Okay, I think that’s it… except… we finally got two Sams!! And yes, I had a moment of “Oh man, Sammy, lookin’ hot!!” when Sam shot the first shapeshifter in the back in the motel room.  He looked gooood there :oP

And… I’m done.  I know I've missed a few things, but I think I've rambled enough.  In all, I enjoyed the episode. I was excited and on the edge of my seat and I felt GOOD while watching it and after watching it.  So, thank you, Supernatural, for making me all excited again. Oh how I’ve missed you. <3
