Not even the lab is safe

This story about a missing graduate student named Annie Le at Yale is really upsetting me. I think it's because I can relate to this young woman...she's a female grad student, a bit younger than myself, who is in the physical sciences, and who works in several different lab facilities. She went into one of her labs this week, in a building full of ( Read more... )

It's so awful. I feel sick too. :( Oh Honey, be careful and carry mace or something. Sometimes the world seems such a scary place. That poor girl was so tiny... what kind of sick coward attacks someone who weighs 90lbs????

This was an incredibly audacious crime. Someone felt like he (and let's face it, it's a he) could do this in pretty much broad daylight and get away with it. How can we protect ourselves from the biggest sociopaths? I don't know if we can. At least there are 70 cameras all around that building...this guy is going to appear on at least one of them. Sick coward is right :(

Yes. Well, with a truly determined individual, it's true; there isn't a lot you can do unless you are in fact some kind of ninja or something. But most people are just not that hell bent so learning self defense and carrying mace, a shrieker and some brass knuckles is likely to be a huge help. I need to learn self-defense too, I am highly in favor of all women learning I have just never gotten around to it. :/ I think I'm lazy.

I hope the camera footage leads them straight to the bastard and I hope he resists arrest enough to justify the police officers putting the beat-down on him.
