The world will get bored of Italo pretty soon, and what better to be the next forgotten disco genre for revival than Hi-NRG? It fulfills all the criteria, (cheap synths, fat production, largely forgotten artists, cult viability) with the major disadvantage that it is extremely, explicitly gay. But gay culture is making a comeback, over here at least, and in an age of where thuggish homophobia is rampant in pop culture, at least fag-friendly artists like the Scissor Sisters are redressing the balance a little bit.

So, if it is in fact ok to like Hi-NRG now, I give you:

EARLENE BENTLEY "The Boys Come To Town" (Trippy Disco Re-Edit)

What more do you need? A wailing black mama singing about "boys", LOTS of cowbell, cheap FM synths, and an awesome Metro Area-esque piano bridge which was one of the elements tucked away at the end of the original that I had to exploit more with the edit. Enjoy!

And if you are keen to hear more Hi-NRG after this, then check the Les Cokell Manchester 1983 mixes we posted in the Discopia gay issue, at the bottom of this page. This is where I heard Earlene first, and there are many more delights on those mixes!

hi-nrg, disco heaven
