It felt really good to wear scrubs; it felt right. Like he was meant to wear them. He and a few other medical students were following a resident through the emergency ward. Every now and then the students were prompted to diagnose a stable patient. When it was Peter’s turn he answered with ease.

“You all did very well. For your homework, please write a paper detailing the steps taken by a receiving nurse when a new patient is taken in. Be as specific as possible.” Peter filed out along with the others. He had to run since he was already late. He only had time to drop off his notes before hailing a cab.

It was his father’s birthday, and he was expected to be there.

The cab dropped him off in front of his parents’ house. Peter paid and hurried up the steps. He paused to catch his breath at the top of the stairs before knocking.

“Peter.” His mother opened the door to him, offering him a tight-lipped smile and a hug. “You’re late,” she scolded him with an affectionate slap on his cheek.

“Sorry, Mom. I was in class.” He gave her a kiss on the cheek which she accepted before stepping aside to let him in. Later tonight a real party would be thrown but right now it was just the family. Naturally Nathan and Heidi were already there.

“What’s with the clothes, Pete?” Nathan asked, his lips pulling into a playful smile as he picked at his younger brother’s sleeve.

“I just came from class,” he answered. “We were in the emergency ward of the hospital.” He greeted Heidi with a hug, then headed farther in looking for his father. Arthur Petrelli sat in the parlor smoking a cigar. When he saw his family approaching he rose to his feet.

“Well, there you are, Peter. I was beginning to think you wouldn’t show.”

“Hi, Dad.” Peter embraced his father. “You really shouldn’t do that,” he added, pointing to the cigar. “It’s bad for your health.” Arthur said nothing, taking a long breath from his cigar.

“Peter, what are you wearing?”

“Scrubs. The class ran a little late and I didn’t have time to change.”

“You’re still doing that?” Arthur asked with a frown. As if Peter’s years spent in medical school were just a phase he was going through. Peter had to set his lips in a stern line to keep from saying anything that would lead to a fight. “Go change into something more decent.”

More decent. Peter was furious, but it was his father’s birthday so he obediently went upstairs and found some clothes to change into. And his parents wondered why he didn’t come by to visit more often.
