A heavy silence rested between them. Peter’s fingers gripped the steering wheel tightly and he stared determinedly forward. He could feel Adam’s eyes on him but he was ignoring the immortal man’s stare at the moment. He kept his focus on the road, which was hard to do because of the state of their car’s windshield.

Everything that happened at Victoria’s still burned fresh in Peter’s mind. And just in case he dared trying to forget, the cracks in the windshield helped remind him.

“Peter.” Adam’s voice nudged him and it was hard not to respond. “Peter, maybe we should get another car.” Peter just kept on driving. “Well, all right,” Adam shrugged. “But I can’t imagine it’s easy to see. It’s not very safe.”

Peter’s nostrils flared. Luckily he had enough sense to flick on his turn signal before pulling off the highway. “So,” he huffed out, “you’re suddenly concerned about people?”

“…What?”

“Because you didn’t seem too concerned about Victoria when you blew her head off!”

“Peter, I--”

“You killed her!” Peter snapped.

“She would’ve killed you, Peter,” Adam bit back. “I killed her to save you.” He reached out to touch Peter’s cheek. Peter quickly jerked away from the older man’s touch, unbuckling and getting out of the car. Adam moved to follow but before he could open his door Peter turned and threw a rock at the cracked windshield.

Peter was furious, but if he was honest with himself he would admit that the murder wasn’t what upset him. It was the expression on Adam’s face when he pulled the trigger. He didn’t look afraid or upset, or anything that one would expect from a shot taken in the heat of the moment. Adam looked cold and determined. Peter had the horrible feeling that Victoria’s death wasn’t to save him at all.

“Peter!” Adam finally got out of the car and moved to join the empath. “Peter, I’m sorry that it upsets you but I had no choice.”

“There’s always a choice,” Peter retorted angrily. “You chose to kill her. I saw your face, Adam: it had nothing to do with me.”

“… All right,” Adam sighed. “I admit that I hated that woman. She was a part of imprisoning me thirty years ago. But I was going to let her go, if you remember.” Peter finally looked at him and allowed Adam to touch him. “She pointed a gun at you, Peter. So I killed her.”

Peter didn’t know what to say, but he could see that Adam was serious. Without a word he reached out and pulled Adam in for a kiss. Adam returned the kisses gratefully. Eventually Peter pulled away.

“Sorry about the windshield,” he mumbled.

“It’s all right,” Adam assured him. “But now we definitely need a new car.”

“Not necessarily.” Peter smiled, leaning up to kiss Adam again. He knew how much the man hated teleporting but the kisses would provide a good distraction. They were gone in an instant, leaving the damaged car and the memories it carried behind.
