I am employed for next year! It's with the Islamic school that I had everyone advise me with, so thanks guys! After discussion, they said I do not need to wear the hijab because they wouldn't want me to do it or pretend to be something I'm not. The people there are very nice and seem supportive and excited to have me on board. I'm the only non-Muslim teacher, but I'm also the only certified teacher on staff. The school is 99% English Language Learners, meaning that English is their second language. Because of this, and because of my certification and specialization, I will be teaching language arts to all of the first, second, and third graders in the school. I get my own room and in December we are moving to a new school. I told them that I ultimately want to end up in a public school. Knowing this they said I can come on expecting it to only be a one-year assignment, but hope I will love it and decide to stay. The money isn't great, and there are no benefits, but it's better than subbing and working at Cato. Plus, I will have weekends off, woohoo!
I actually decided on not going with the school after the interview because I thought that networking while subbing would be the best choice. The principal called me and asked me to reconsider and gave me some things to think about. Also, I don't think it's even possible to get a public school job this year. One school I put an application in for received 566 applications for two positions. The competition is pretty thick. I'll try a year of teaching, then have something that will stand out on my resume for next year. And who knows? This school is growing and it might be something I can stick with.
But for right now, I am content and I actually get to TEACH!!! awesome.
