Bits and Bobs

Well sadly herself_nyc can't come hang out with me this weekend as we'd planned, but that does give me the perfect opportunity to... clean the house. Yay? The hubby and I have written a to do list and divvied up the tasks. Between you and me, I think I've come off quite a bit better, but it hinges on who has to make the dinner (usually this involves a game of chicken, wherein we both wait until the other gets so hungry they can't take it anymore - I am more successful at this than the hubs, so it's looking good).

I also need to finish up my seasonal_spuffy effort. I'd originally planned to have it done by today, but my motivation, she is a fickle beast. I'm continuing to struggle with the sexytimes, and that continues to be most out of character for me. Today I reached the point of frustration whereby I resorted to blocking out the remaining action (you know, bullet-point style), which I hate, but it seems to have done the job as I then added another 2.3k. Still, the ratio of porn to not-porn is sitting stubbornly at about 1:1 - not my intention on starting out. I just wanted a PWP godamnit! But my problem with these two idiots is that I want the emotion-porn just as much as I want the smut. It's an impediment. The finished thing looks likely to clock in around 10k. So much for a short bit of sexing.

On a different note, I've been on a Dar Williams kick lately. Despite the fact that If I Wrote You is my favourite song ever ever, I never really knew her as an artist until recently, but her songwriting ability just blows me away. Right now I am loving After All, in particular this lyric:

And it felt like a winter machine
That you go through and then
You catch your breath and winter starts again
And everyone else is spring bound

And when I chose to live
There was no joy it's just a line I crossed
It wasn't worth the pain my death would cost
So I was not lost or found

Yeah. I feel that on a number of levels, both personal and writerly. The whole first half of the song hits me square in the Buffy feels, in fact. This lady knows depression, that's for sure.

And finally, lobbing this one in rebcake's direction but also for anyone else who's interested, here is a new WIP on EF that's looking very promisng: Echoes of Beljoxa by Myrabeth. Instead of using magic to promote the potentials into full slayers, furthering the imbalance in the slayer line the Eye of Beljoxa told Anya and Giles about, Willow sends Buffy and Spike back in time to prevent the imbalance in the first place, ie Buffy's swan dive off the tower. They end up back in their own bodies in the summer before Glory's and Dawn's arrivals, which should be plenty of time, except the trip comes with a warning: some things just can't be changed, or they risk making everything infinitely worse. What I like most about this story is the dynamic between Buffy and Spike. They're in that place at the end of S7 where they're physicaly and emotionally close, but not quite there; that undefined space between more than friends and less than lovers. So they not only have the past to sort out, but themselves. So far, it's all unspooling nice and subtly, and everyone else seems well characterised. I'm enjoying.
