My feelings on Scandal, let me show you them

I am really enjoying Scandal right now. I watch an episode with my lunch a couple of times a week, and it is awesome on so many levels.

I love that there are so many interesting and complex female characters. Mellie Grant is my fave, but the fact that she actually shares the screen with three other multi-faceted women is wonderful.

I do not particularly love Olivia Pope, but I love that her character exists - that a powerful, talented and intelligent black woman can have her fingers in all the pies, getting shit done at the highest level, with a Machiavellian level of moral greyness that is usually only attributed to white male characters.

I even love that her story lines so far have had nothing to do with her race. I know it’s not realistic, but my goodness, it’s damn nice to sit back and watch the political intrigue for an hour without being reminded of how shitty the world is to dark-skinned people, and even worse to dark-skinned women.

I love that there is an openly gay couple, whose stories are not confined or defined by their gayness, and who get to kiss on screen and stuff because, you know, they’re a freaking couple.

I love the feminist agenda (although I do not love the copious use of the word ‘whore’ *sigh*), I love the representation, I love Harrison’s face, I love James’s glasses, I love Abbie’s scary-intense expressions, I love Olivia’s trouser suits and ball gowns I LOVE ALMOST EVERY LITTLE INCH OF IT.

The only thing I do not love is Fitz-fucking-gerald’s manpain. Just gimme a break ok, you manipulative bastard. Then again, he is one of only two straight white men in the entire main cast, so I suppose they had to represent the straight white male experience somewhere. At any rate, the last three episodes he has hardly been in it and it was awesome.

In short, if you’re not watching this show then you should be. That is all.
