Film: The Heat

The hubs and I went to see this last night, and both of us found it hilarious. In basics it's a pretty standard cop buddy-comedy, but in execution it just felt really original. Probably because both cops are women, there was no nudity, there was barely even a love interest, and the whole film is centred around their relationship and their personal growth. The jokes were (mostly) really funny, and the touching bits were touching.

The only thing I would say that disappointed me was the albino character. The gags at his expense were tacky and prejudiced, and I got the distinct feeling that they made him a misogynist asshole so that the level of anti-albino bile going his way would be more palatable. I mean, it worked -- I laughed a couple of times, before my brain caught up. But that's my privilege working.

I just thought it was a real shame because without that aspect, the film is pretty much flawless. There weren't even the run-of-the-mill fat jokes aimed at McCarthy's character, who is also refreshingly lacking in insecurity about her weight and/or sexuality. I still recommend it, just with that one caveat.

I especially recommend it for anyone who's ever enjoyed ownsariver and I getting in each other's faces in the comments over on sansa_sandor, because this film is basically us if we were American cops ;) (bonus points if you can guess which one I'd be *g*).

All in all, 9/10. Just wish I could give it a 10.

all the awesome ladies, ownsariver gets her own tag, film, we think we're so funny
