Because you lot know everything...

I'm thinking about getting an e-reader for a three week holiday in the summer in which I don't fancy lugging around a big pile of books, but was wondering if anyone knew 1) if you can upload your own files onto them (i.e. fanfic) , and 2) how well they survive in humid environments. And, you know, if you have one, would you recommend it?

I know for sure that you can with the Amazon Kindle because I have acquaintances who have done it, but I'm not sure what document format it requires, though I'm assuming it's a simple one. I also know that the Sony Readers can take .pdf files, which Kindle can't ( ... )

I have a Kindle - actually, we have two Kindles in this household. Best Beloved's, which is a Kindle 2, is sort of jointly-owned; we use it for reading books. Mine, which is a Kindle 1, is basically fan fiction-only; I use that one when I'm nursing, so it has had a very hard life. (Lots of use, being dropped several thousands times on a hardwood floor, etc.) It's fairly easy to upload your own files to the Kindle; you can download a free ebook making program, and you go: cut and paste from the internet -> word-processing program -> ebook program. It takes about thirty seconds to do a story once you've done it three times. (halcyon_shift has a nifty thingy that will produce a file suitable for your reader if you give it the URL of the story, but I haven't tried it, since my computer is sensitive and I'm used to the old way.)

I don't live in a humid environment, but the people at kindledfans answered all my questions before I got one, and they could probably field that one, too. (melina123 is sort of the Patient Zero for Kindles among media fans, in that she not only ( ... )

Hey, thanks for your advice. Having looked into it a little more I think I'll probably go with the sony e-reader, but the kindle was a very close second (the e-reader comes in silver, though, which would match my laptop. Very important consideration, obvs).
