love, work, birthday

Came home and had a brief melt-down because the lasagna I'd ben looking forward to was both overcooked and cold and mr_pugh had eaten the icecream I was saving.  Now admittedly, this was his first attempt at lasagna, and for a first time out it was ok.  I've certainly made worse ones myself.  Also, he didn't have any idea I'd been saving the icecream, since I had never said so.  So it wasn't his fault, yet I was angry with him and disappointed.  So we went out for a walk together and looked at swanky houses and watched people play with their dogs.  It felt great.  I brought my camera along and took pictures.  Then we stopped in at Goodwill and I bought a six dollar dress that rocks.  I came home happy and relaxed and excited about my new dress, which I shall wear on my birthday.  We stopped and got snacks at Rabbas and then watched Time Bandits.  This is one of the reasons I adore him.  He can make things good.

In other news I find my friends discussing retirement.  This is not an issue for me.  Do I have a secret trust fund, you wonder?  No.  I don't.  I simply do not plan to retire.  I have never planned to retire.  Part of this is that I come from the poor, and the poor don't retire.  Retirement is a middle-class plan.  I could do a whole Marxist conspiracy thing here, but basically, retirement is the plan of people with money.

Another  reason I don't plan to retire is that I personally think retirement is bad for you.  And this isn't just because I've never had a job that plays much over minimum wage (altough I haven't) and it's not because I'm too lazy to save money (although I probably am).  I just think that work gives my life meaning and I always want to keep doing it.  I'm aiming to enter academia from the professional side, and those people often work until they collapse in a pile of dust in their classrooms, like Dracula or Doria Gray.  Also, I like to write, and one can do that at pretty much any age.  Ditto painting, and a whole lot of other things.

In other news I've got a bunch of projects to finish by the end of August.  A book review, an ethics review, prep for my oral exam, and do a draft of my dissertation proposal.

I'm also thinking about making chocolate cheesecake for my birthday, since it's cold and yummy.

If you're one of those people who plan to come to my birthday party, you may be wondering about the details.

What to wear: anything, but black is preferred.  Feel free to dress crazy.  I shall wear my top hat.

What to bring?  If you've got a favourite booze, bring it along.

Don't feel obligated to bring presents.  I will gladly accept presents, but you're just as wlcome to come without them. If you want to bring presents but are broke or cheap (like me), I love things that are used or handmade.

I'm thinking of a garden-top pg-13 socializing, followed by in-apartment socializig of a more boozy variety.  Time to be determined by when people can come.

birthday
