The old days

Every once in a while, a person or a name pops up on the radio or elsewhere, someone I knew years ago in one capacity or another. Of course, now that I'm in my late 70s, it is more likely to be someone younger than I am; most of the adults whom I looked up to as role models when I was in my 20s and 30s are long dead.

Yesterday, on NPR, a demographer was interviewed, and his name was so unusual that it had to be either someone I knew when he was a fourth grader, or possibly his son with the same name. A quick background: when I first became a Unitarian, I attended a church in Kensington, MD, and jumped in with both feet, teaching in the religious education program and getting involved with the amateur theatricals that were one of the church's cultural opportunities.

I found the gentleman's professional Web site, which included his e-mail address, so I sent him a brief e-mail just to say hello. Unless I have maintained an ongoing relationship with someone for the past 50 or 60 years, I don't expect anyone to want to enter into a steady friendship, but it's nice to just contact him or her and say that I remember the person fondly.

I got a pleasant, brief reply from him. A nice way to start my day today.

old age, simple pleasures, quality of life, friends, the 'net, nostalgia
