Tin ear? More like lead

I've said it before, and I'll say it again ... and again, and again, and again, public radio is so awful when it comes to the coverage of music that it's beyond belief; it's surreally bad! That includes all genres. I remember hearing many years ago that some of what were then known as "five-and-ten-cent stores" gave job applicants a simple intelligence test of sorts in order to weed out people who were too smart. The thinking was that the merchandise would turn off bright people and that only slightly lower-than-average-IQ people would be able to maintain sufficient job interest to appear happy and enthusiastic when waiting on customers or restocking the inventory. I've decided that especially the national, but the larger local public radio stations as well, also give a pre-hire test. Only those with absolutely no ear for music whatsoever need apply.

In my various moves around the country, I have listened to and sometimes become a member of public radio stations. I never noticed a deficiency in the musical acuity of the staff of most stations in smaller cities. However, besides the programs that come out of headquarters in Washington, D.C., major stations in Philadelphia, Washington, and Dallas, for example, are often or always equally tone deaf and interview or feature only talent-free individuals and groups.

Because radio is the only medium that comes into my apartment (no TV, newspapers, or news magazines), it would be such a blessing if the major variety shows on public radio occasionally wowed me with an innovative, original, smooth, great-sounding, and/or actually musical individual or group. I'm not holding my breath, however.

music, quality of life, media ineptness, gripes
