I drove down to Bensalem this evening to attend a basketball game between Holy Ghost Prep and a small, local public school. Basketball has become a more aggressive sport since I was in high school 60+ years ago. The son of close friends attends HGP and is on the basketball team, though he didn't get to play this evening. He called to thank me for coming but sounded really down in the dumps. His team lost, and he said that because the other team had played "trash ball," his team had responded in kind. Unlike his father, he was less critical of the officials who were refereeing the game. The dads in the stands were especially upset with many of the calls against HGP.
I am not a team-sports fan, but if someone I know is on a high school team, I go to a game now and then just for friendship's sake. I'd like to see a game that has a lot less hostility involved; maybe I'll try another game later in their season.
