Media pitfall: Losing sight of the listener

Nov 19, 2011 10:06

As I was listening to the local NPR station this morning, a young lady came on to do a story; and I realized that she was so wrapped up in her own words, image, and potential celebrity that she had completely lost any awareness of the story, the listeners, or what her job really is. She made me realize that over the years, I have been irritated with that phenomenon in various radio (and earlier in my life, TV) personalities; and the print media are not immune from this disorder. The danger is becoming too enamored with the supposed importance of the reporting process.

The purposes of the media are to be focused on facts, to get those facts accurately recorded, and to present them to the public clearly and without "slant."

arrogance, media ineptness
