After getting Cassie off to school, Rita headed to the office. As usual, she was the first one in, and she was glad for it. The shootings in Tucson weighed heavily on her mind. The staff had met on January 6th to plan the stories for the January 13th issue. Of course, being a weekly, the paper had missed the immediate news cycle following the tragedy. Still, there were ways the paper could provide some coverage, and Rita wanted to get her staff's ideas too, as well as find out which story (or stories) might have to be sacrificed. Not to mention that, because the paper was published on Thursdays, the press deadline was 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday. At least she had two and a half days to get everything jiggered around. The one thing that could not be cut was student reaction to TCU's Rose Bowl win, but everything else, in her mind, was negotiable.
To get everything done, she needed to call a special staff meeting that morning. Everyone on the writing staff, as well as photographers, copy editors and graphic artists, received an urgent email and voice mail that ended with "I expect to see you in the conference room. Rita."
