Ariel huddled at the front desk, peering out at the gloomy weather contemplatively. She really hoped it wouldn’t be too hard to get home, if you could call that small room a home. Her truck had been slow to turn over on the way in, and it always did act up in the cold weather these days. Probably needed to replace something that she couldn’t afford to yet.
There wasn’t much business today, most people deciding to stay in, but there was enough to legitimize keeping the shop open. She wasn’t entirely pleased with having to come in, though she had a smile on her face as always. Part of her would rather just curl up under her quilt and listen to the radio and sleep.
But money was money, and on a slow week like this one she was going to be hard pressed to keep the roof over her head and gas in the truck, the way prices were going up. She sighed and rubbed her wrist, forearm, and upper arm, ending at her collar bone. The icy weather sunk into those spots of her bones where she’d had them broken. She hated the reminders.
“Bah, silly girl,” she whispered to herself, shaking away the gloom the bleak weather brought on her. She turned up the radio just a little and started humming along to distract herself until another customer came along.
