So he wasn't sure he would regain his hearing after the shriek of joy his Mum and let out when he had asked her for ring shopping help. The fifteen minutes that followed of her gushing about how this was fantastic and she was so happy, and Erica was the perfect girl for him and she really liked her had been interesting. J.J. really hadn't been lying when he'd told Erica that she was the first person he'd gone out with that Dianna had actually liked, and he kind of thought this conversation just proved it that much more.
It was a nice conversation to be having, he just wished he weren't standing in the middle of a jewelry store trying to pick a ring and get his Mum's opinion while she chattered on about the various wedding related things that would need to get done. "Mum, mum." J.J. repeated the word, trying to get her attention. "You can worry about that stuff later, right now your son needs help actually picking the bloody ring." He said, wishing for the first time that he wasn't an ocean away from his Mum. Sure he could have asked Laine or Ena to come and help, but they'd both been busy today and he really just couldn't handle waiting any longer to find the right ring.
He heard his Mum laugh on the other end and his Father in the background telling her to focus. "Thanks Dad." J.J. muttered as his Mum finally seemed to get a handle on things and focus again.
"Jonothan, you can allow me to be a bit happy about this." Dianna chided, "One of my boys are finally settling down."
J.J. bit his tongue to keep from reminding her that he had always been pegged as the one who would settle down first. Monte and Orlando both seemed to have their minds set on doing the exact opposite of what their Mum would like them to both do. "I know, I know." He answered. "The store is only open so long today and I'd like to actually propose sometime soon."
"Soon?" Dianna asked, completely ignoring anything else he might have said. "How soon?"
He reached up and ran a hand through his hair, trying not to think about what his Mum might say when he told her when he was planning on doing it. "Ah, just soon, Mum." J.J. waited for a shriek or to be scolded for not telling her exactly when he was planning on doing it. Was it insane that he was relieved when it was a shriek he heard?
"Jonothan James! You're planning on proposing soon and you don't even have a ring?" Dianna's tone was disbelieving, though she wasn't surprised by her youngest actions.
"Mum, what does it matter if I've had the ring for weeks, days or hours? I've been planning this for awhile." J.J. just hadn't had the time to buy a ring, and kind of thought that if he had a ring sitting around sooner or later Erica would have found out about it before he was fully ready to go proposing.
"You are your father's son." Dianna muttered, though her tone was fond. "Since your on a time limit I'm going to tell you I like the first ring you picked out, I wouldn't look any further."
"Are you sure, Mum?" J.J. had looked at what felt like a million rings and texted images of them to his Mum as he'd gone through them. "My gut says that's the one as well." He answered, having thought of Erica the moment he'd seen it.
"Jonothan, in things like this it's best to go with your gut feeling." Dianna replied, her tone still clearly beyond happy. "Still can't believe my little boy's going to propose!"
J.J. groaned and muttered a "I'm twenty five, Mum." though he could understand that he would always be her little boy, even if the thought made him grimace a bit. "Going to let you go now Mum, thanks for the help." He wasn't trying to rush her off the phone, but if he knew his Mum well he knew this conversation could drag on for at least another hour. "I'll call you later, okay?"
"You better!" Dianna replied. "Jonothan, I'm proud of you." She added, though J.J. already knew she was. "Love you."
"I know you are, Mum." J.J. answered with a faint laugh. "And I love you, too." With that he ended the call and indicated to the jeweler which ring he wanted to purchase, a part of him hoping it would be one Erica would like. He only planned on doing this once, so he wanted to make sure he did it right.
