The Holidays were always filled with traditions, things that were routine year after year. Neve had never been one for routines, for repetitive gestures, for the mundane day and and day out. That wasn't to say they didn't have their traditions, things that if they didn't do them it wouldn't feel like the holidays. They were small traditions, such as the Stadheim girls did not as a rule change out of their pajamas all day on Christmas day. Shelby had asked her if this was going to change since they were spending the day at the Abernathy's, and Neve told her girls 'no'. She didn't think Jake would mind as they had discussed this being a day of relaxation, and she was determined not to change their traditions on the girls.
She had worked Christmas Eve, and Ezra had done the lions share of holiday activities with the girls. So today was truly for relaxing and exchanging presents. The girls and Ezra had been awake when she got off work that morning, and so they had done their family Christmas already, and were prepared for spending the rest of the day with Jake, Star and His parents.
There were moments that Neve just paused and enjoyed the sheer fact that she had someone again, that holidays weren't spent remembering solely who was missing, but instead she could be thankful for what she had. Not that she was forgetting who was missing, there would always be a part of her that would remember who she and her girls had lost. But there was remembering, and then there was dwelling, and Never had never been one to dwell.
Much to Neve's surprised it seemed as if her girls were actually all excited about spending the day with Jake and Star. She didn't want to assume, but even Mack seemed to be warming to Jake again, which was a relief. Her middle child had always liked Jake, had always enjoyed the way he never talked down to her, so to say Neve was pleased when Mackenzie managed to crack a smile on their way over was definitely an understatement.
When they reached the Abernathy's house, Neve had to giggle at the sight they must have been. Dressed in pajamas and hauling brightly wrapped packages up to the door, she mused that at least the neighbors would have something to talk about. Her youngest was the only one not laden down with something, and unsurprisingly Bryn raced to the door and hit the doorbell, excitement showing on her face as she bounced on her heels and waited for someone to answer the door.
