Erica had planned on doing this last weekend, but she'd decided it probably wouldn't be so fun to pick out a tree and make J.J. haul it up to her apartment in the rain, so she'd decided to put it off until this weekend. They'd gone down to Mainstay Farms to pick out a tree earlier, and Erica was so happy that J.J. had been more than willing to share this experience with her. She'd never had a Christmas tree before, not really. She'd been placed in houses with Christmas trees, but none of those places had ever felt like home, those people hadn't felt like family. And then, as an adult, she'd never seen the point of getting a tree. She didn't have people in her life to share the holiday with until recently, and she wasn't religious or anything, so why bother? She did have people to share it with now, though, and she was really looking forward to it.
Getting the tree up into her apartment had been an adventure, but J.J. had been such a sport about it, and it wasn't like she'd picked out a huge tree. It was only a little taller than herself, and it was all bundled up with netting, so the width really wasn't a factor. There'd been an 'oh shit' moment when she'd realized that she'd completely forgotten that she would need a tree stand, but they'd gone out and got one with no problem. She'd picked out a bunch of whimsical, colorful ornaments, lights, and garland to decorate the tree with, as well as a gold star to put on the top.
Erica sat crossed legged on the ground in front of the tree, all the decorations strewn about around her as she opened a box of lights. She glanced over at J.J. with a sheepish grin. "I've never actually decorated a tree before," she admitted, and then she tilted her head as a question came to mind. "What were Christmases like for you in New Zealand? I mean, it's summer there right now, right? Do y'all have Christmas trees and stuff over there?" It might seem like a stupid question, but she was curious, and she really wanted to know about where he was from.
