"I can't believe it." Nathan's voice hadn't lost that shocked quality since they'd both been given the news.
Marie cast a sideways glance at him from her seat at the bar. He wasn't taking the news well though she supposed he could be taking it worse. "Well, I guess it makes sense." Marie shrugged. "Last on, first off. Not exactly the newest concept."
Nathan shook his head in disagreement, as if that action would make it go away. "But we were good," he said, making some flailing hand gestures while Marie just nodded in agreement. "We were really good. And, I mean, fuck... Now I gotta tell my girlfriend and, shit, my parents." Marie winced sympathetically as her former coworker downed the rest of his beer. "It's just. This wasn't how I planned the holiday to go, y'know?
After briefly wondering if she would be crossing a line, Marie placed a hand on Nathan's shoulder. She hoped it came off as comforting. "Nathan, no one plans to be laid off, okay?" Lord knew she hadn't. "We were good and that's why we'll be okay," she said with more confidence than she actually felt. What the hell did she know about this? It wasn't like she had much -any- experience that would help with this. "You work magic with the camera and I'll be shocked if you don't get hired somewhere soon, so don't beat yourself up about this."
"I'll try," he said in a tone of voice that did nothing to convince Marie that he meant it. Nathan sighed before checking his watch. "I think I'm gonna head out. Want me to walk you to your car or are you gonna stick around?"
Marie held up her still half full bottle of Shiner, and couldn't help but mentally reward herself for thinking of it as half full. "I'm gonna stick around," she said with a grin. "Get my moneys worth. Thanks though."
"Alright then." Nathan paused awkwardly before sticking his hand out. "It was a pleasure working with you. Good luck with everything."
"You too," Marie said as she took his outstretched hand. It seemed a bit reserved to end a 6 month working relationship with a handshake, but then again they'd never been super close. Tonight had been more of a random holy-crap-we-both-got-laid-off sort of thing. It made Marie regret not talking to him more when they'd worked together. "Take care of yourself." Nathan just shot her a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes before he left the bar. Marie was a little jealous that she didn't have anyone to go home to like he did.
Then again, it was probably time for her to look for a newer, cheaper apartment. With her lease almost up and no job she couldn't really afford to resign a lease. The whole thing made her sad. Marie had worked hard to make that place feel like home. Oh well, she thought as she downed more of her Shiner. She'd just have to make a new place home.
