The holidays were right around the corner, and even though she was sure there were many people who would tease her for going through all the boxes she and Maureen had stuffed away in the attic, Charisma really wanted to get a head start on organizing the various decorations she and Maureen had accumulated separately over the years. And it would give her a chance to see if anything needed replacing. She liked knowing these things ahead of time so that she wouldn’t be surprised and then rushed trying to get everything together.

It was a relief that their attic was a finished one, even if it was rather small; it made the process so much easier. She was also grateful to whichever previous resident had installed the shelving units, because having their boxes put away neatly with their labels visible made things much simpler as well, and she was equally glad that Maureen was in the habit of meticulously labeling boxes as well.

Standing on her toes, Charisma used the tips of her fingers to try to shimmy a box down from the top shelf, and in the process dislodged a smaller one, about the size of a shoebox. The small, brown box fell to the ground, the lid coming off in the process. "Shoot," she murmured as she glanced down, seeing that the contents had spilled out. She finished bringing down the box she’d been trying to get before turning her attention to the spilled box.

It had to be one of Maureen’s boxes, because Charisma didn’t recognize it. As she turned the box over, setting it to rights, she noticed that it wasn’t labeled. Also curious was the fact that it’s only contents were letters. She was curious about them, wondering if they were love letters of some kind, but she was determined to respect Maureen’s privacy and not snoop though them. That was until she started gathering up the envelopes to put them back in the box and happened to notice who they were addressed to and from.

Falling back from the balls of her feet to sit on the cold attic floor, Charisma stared at the top envelope of the stack in her hands for a full minute, trying to process the fact that there was a letter addressed to her and Maureen from their father. "What the hell?" she muttered as she began looking through the rest of the envelopes. They were all the same, addressed to her and Maureen from their father, and her head was starting to hurt as she tried to figure out what it meant.

Maureen had letters from their father. Letters that she’d never told her about. With a shaking hand, she opened one envelope, pulling out the aged paper. She wasn’t sure how long she sat there reading through the letters - there must have been almost fifty! - but when she was finished, the letters all put back neatly in the box, Charisma leaned back against one of the shelving units and tried to sort out her thoughts. He’d written to them all those years, had apparently wanted to be a part of their lives, and she just couldn’t wrap her mind around it. After sitting for a few minutes, staring blankly and just thinking, she grabbed the box, stood up, and headed down to the living room. Maureen would be home soon, and she needed answers.
