Date: Saturday, November 5, 2011 Characters: Dalton Teller, Darcy Teller, Audrey Teller, Anyone else Location: Blossoms Status: Public Summary: It was a nice day for an outdoor festival Completion: Incomplete
Luke probably wouldn't be attending if it weren't for Darcy--mostly because he likely wouldn't have known about it but also because he'd never really been plugged into community-type social events. He was working on it, sort of, even though his default state was still homebody and probably always would be. He'd mentioned it to Iz, though, because it'd sounded like something they could probably do together. Food and craft booths and hayrides and such should be fun, and it got them out a bit.
Even if Darcy hadn't told Luke he'd better be there.
He didn't see her yet, but it was a big area, bigger than he'd expected, and crowds were forming. It occurred to him that this was all hers, hers and her siblings'. He couldn't imagine it, but he was trying not to think about the possibility that she might be way out of his league.
"We should find some funnel cake or something," he said, "funnel cake seems like it'd be a festival-type thing."
"I'd hope I would know it by now," Luke said, stumbling happily into Isaac as he tried to follow the smells in the general direction of food. Some cider might be good too.
"No, me too," he said, "it's not nearly nippy enough for this time of year. I bet it's nice and brisk in New York, and windy. We'd be picking way more apples than we'll ever use." He smiled a little, missing their little tradition. "Now I want caramel apples. We could attempt to make some."
"Hm, how hard can they be?" He squeezed Luke's shoulder before letting his arm drop and investigating a nearby stall. "Warm up some caramel, dip in apple, right? Bet we could manage it."
"And I always used those leftover apples. They made great decaying art for the more conceptual student shows."
"Decaying art is a little more conceptual than I can handle," Luke said, chuckling.
"If they do this next year, you should do a booth," he said as he got a better look at the different stalls. "There's all sorts of arts and crafts here."
"You just don't understand my art." Isaac sniffed. "It's about mortality and bullshitting your professors."
He glanced around, frowning slightly. "You know, I haven't really been working on anything lately. This whole 9-5 is really putting a damper on my creative output. Hard to argue with the paychecks though."
"I used to try to bullshit my professors, but it took me almost as long to figure out how as it took to actually do the work," Luke said with a snort.
He frowned a little and looked over at Isaac as he sidestepped a group of pre-teen girls. "I thought you liked teaching. I mean. If you don't that's obviously okay, but y'know, if you're not happy, that's not good."
"That's because you are an awful liar." He teased.
"No, I am happy, don't get me wrong. Just, that I don't want to lose sight of what I really want to do. Guess I'll just have to make a concerted effort to work on my sculpture. Have to have something to sell if I'm going to have a booth."
"True. I hadn't realised you weren't making as much stuff," he admitted. It felt like something he should've noticed, and he hoped it wasn't because he was too distracted. He didn't want to think he was that bad a friend.
"Maybe you're just tired. I'm finding out how draining it can be at the end of the day after dealing with kids. Are you getting enough sleep and such? Like, uninterrupted?"
"Probably. Just not sitting home high as a kite all day." He nudged him. "It's better for me really. Don't worry about it. I'm just busier and shit. I'll figure it out. Anyway, if I wasn't sleeping, you'd know. I'd be all over the map."
The medication he took pretty much required a good night's sleep to work as he'd discovered through trial and grievous over the years.
"So where's Darcy anyway? Isn't this her and her brother's shinding?"
"Busy's good," he said tentatively, "and I for one am happy you're not high quite as much." He grinned, feeling a little better even if he couldn't help worrying. "I figure if you were having trouble sleeping you might be in my room more, too."
"Oh--well." Luke looked around, his lips tugging up a bit. "I guess she's around somewhere. We could find her if we follow the flowers. But, yes, she and Dalton were the ones who put all this together. Pretty sure this is actually their property we're on."
"Dunno, maybe." He couldn't remember the last time he'd crawled into Luke's bed. It hadn't felt right in a while and maybe that was more a sign of mental health then mental instability. He had no idea anymore since he'd never had a firm grasp on the concept of sanity to begin with. Normally he'd ask Luke, but that seemed contradictory in this case. "Certainly saving a lot of money on pot anyway."
"That's pretty impressive." He nudged Luke again, smiling at his smile. "Got a good business head on her shoulders, huh?"
"Door's always open," he said reflexively, mostly because it had been for years and they were both used to it. But actually, it occurred to him that if Iz was sleeping well, that was a good thing.
"Yeah, it is. I mean, I think they inherited, but that was a few years ago so it's pretty impressive that they haven't run it into the ground or sold it." He blinked. That seemed like awfully faint praise out loud. He probably wouldn't put it quite that way if it ever came up with Darcy. "Er, that is. Yes. she has a pretty good head, for business. She's been giving me some small business tips as well, y'know, for the bookshop idea. Still not sure about it, but she makes it seem easy."
"Thanks." He pulled him a little toward a stand that was selling corn husk arts and crafts, poking at the dolls, weighing whether it was something he could do with his class.
"I think you should go for it." Isaac appraised him under dark lashes. "I'll probably get a permanent job out of this, rumor is that the Mrs. Donnell might not come back out of maternity leave and administration likes me. I can keep us afloat for a while if you want to persue your dream, babe."
Isaac's encouragement warmed him inside, it always did. "Of course administration likes you," he pointed out, "but even if I go for this, it'll be awhile before I'm at a point where I could quit my job. I don't have much in the way of stock, and I haven't found a place. And I don't like the idea of living off you like I did when we first moved here."
He lifted a hand because he figured Iz would wave that off, "I know, I know. But still." Luke glanced askance at him. "If I did quit, it wouldn't be for long. And I'd probably switch to part time before I'd quit altogether, just because that'd make it easier on us both. But...I appreciate it."
"We'll figure it out." Isaac said confidently. "With places closing right and left, there's no rush anyway. Buy what you want slowly, fill up our storage unit and you'll be ready to go when its time."
"Yeah well." Isaac smiled at him. "You're my family."

It was nice to be outside in decent weather with the bustle of people around them. Took them both out of their own heads.
"Makes me miss New York a little. We used to go out to the suburbs for apple picking in the fall."
