Date: October 27th, 2011 Characters: Shoshana Wise, Adrienne Travis Location: Coffee Shop in Fort Worth Status: Semi-Private Summary: Shosh and Adrienne catch up over coffee. Completion: Complete
Shosh didn't get it, wouldn't be able to do it. Pack up and move somewhere with someone she had only known a year. Maybe it came down to the fact that everyone truly close to her in her life she had known for years, most of whom were like family. A year just didn't seem like a sufficient amount of time to know someone, and she had to stop herself before she made some comment about people surprising you. Adrienne seemed to have her mind made up, and who was she to question the decision. "I just hope that if you do choose to move that you end up happy." She commented with a shrug.
"Good, look forward to it." Shosh said. She wasn't counting on things every being comfortable between her and Adrienne again. Clearly her friend had picked a side, and Jase was family, it made sense. Shosh didn't feel guilty though, she was trying to remain friends, and if Adrienne wanted to vilify her, well, she'd just treat her like everyone else who felt they had a right to judge her. She wasn't going to try and keep the friendship, not if she would always feel like Adrienne held something against her for ending the relationship with Jase. Three months didn't seem nearly long enough to be upset over a relationship not working out, and Shosh felt like she had warned everyone involved that things might go south.
Shosh quirked an eyebrow, wondering what Adrienne's opinion of 'not friendly' was. Sure she and Cody fought like cats and dogs, but even in their fighting anyone could point out that Shosh was fair less friendly to Cody then he ever was to her. She opened her mouth to say something, quickly closing it when she heard the reason Cody might not have been the friendliest to her. "Adrienne, please tell me you didn't do that." She muttered. "I am annoying, and Cody's had nearly fifteen years of experience with that personality trait of mine." Shosh stated bluntly. "I realize you don't see that, I don't know why you can't see it. But it's there, front and center." She wasn't going to hold back. "I might say shit about Cody, but even I know that if he felt the need to point that out, he wasn't trying to be a jerk or unfriendly. He was just being fucking honest." She didn't care if a dollar would end up in the swear jar, there was no other way to say that.
"I think that's all I want. To be happy. And Col'... he does, he really does." It had been a long time of working towards what they had now, but they had it, and she didn't want to let it go. She paused slightly. "And it's not like I'd end up being by myself, I'm sure." She found Shosh's eyes. "If I left... it's not like there's much holding Jase here. He said it himself when I talked to him about it. He can open another shop anywhere." Sure, he'd built a client base in Texas, but a good reputation was a good reputation.
She frowned. "Stubborn, opinionated, sometimes a bit of a brat, I'll agree to. People who annoy me, I don't choose to call my friends," she said pointedly. "Maybe I haven't known you for a decade like some people, but that's not my fault, Shosh." She reached for her drink again, finishing it. She didn't know what the hell Shosh's problem was, but if she had to defend the friendship to the actual friend... Well, that was enough said right here.
"Well then do whatever makes you happy." Maybe she was more of a realist or had too many issues surrounding relationships, she just didn't think happily ever afters were achieved in a year of knowing someone. Shosh wondered what Adrienne was getting at, was she trying to make her feel guilty for ending things with Jase? Sighing she gave the other woman a serious look. "Look, I'm sorry things didn't work out between him and I." She said. "But I'm not going to be made to feel guilty that things didn't work out. If Jase is happy moving away from Texas, I wish him the best, I really do." And she did, because even if she hadn't been the right girl for him, she did hope he found someone who was perfect for him. "Have either of you thought about all the hoops that'll need to be jumped through in order to close or sell businesses down here?" Having gone through all the hoops herself in transferring North Tree into her own name, she knew it wasn't easy or fun.
She closed her eyes and sighed. "Don't forget rude and bitchy." Shosh tacked on, fully self aware that she wasn't little miss sunshine, though it was become clearer that maybe Adrienne didn't see her for who she really was. "Maybe you haven't, but you have known me long enough that I thought you'd know by now that I can be annoying. Sure I've never done it to you, but that doesn't mean it's not a personality trait I possess." Shosh wasn't sure how things had come to this, she was getting the distinct feeling that Adrienne held some kind of bitterness over the whole break up with Jase. "I'm not trying to be a bitch right now. I've had twenty five years of getting to know myself, and when Cody says I'm annoying it's not him being a jerk, it's him stating an honest to god fact." She didn't know why Adrienne didn't see that, and maybe if Adrienne couldn't see her who she was entirely, maybe they weren't the sort of people who should be friends.
"I will." She shouldn't feel the need to defend her relationship, her choices. Especially not to the woman that she had taken to calling her best friend over the past months. Adrienne blinked twice. "Well. Then. My intention wasn't to make you feel guilty, Shosh." It hadn't, actually. It had been to make a point, she supposed, but that point hadn't been to make Shosh feel guilty. She shook her head, amused. "Jase is a business major," she said softly. "He knows the ins and outs better than most people."
She crossed her arms, shifting in her seat and biting her tongue until Shosh had finished. "Fine." She leveled a look at Shosh. "Y'know, I find it real interesting that you defend him and his opinion to me when all I did was say that to me, you're not annoying. But whatever, Shosh, okay? So sorry about that." It was good to see where she sat in Shosh's social circle. Below the guy that Shosh herself had called a pain. She reached for her purse, hesitating as a thought struck her. "Y'know, I haven't had many close female friends in my life, Shosh. I honestly thought this was going to be different."
She wondered if Shosh had been like all the other so-called cool girls and women in her life. Simply becoming friends with her to get closer to Jase. And now that her and Jase were over, Shosh's own doing, she was done with her friendship with Adrienne. At least everyone else before her had had the decency to drop Adrienne when they'd made it with Jase. There was a reason Adrienne had called Shosh her best friend, after all.
Shosh wasn't trying to make her friend defend her relationship, she was simply voicing her thoughts on things. She had not right to tell Adrienne what she should or shouldn't do. Shosh shrugged. "Felt like it. Honestly, I think that you think you're hiding your displeasure well, Ad'. But I can read it in your actions, you're upset with the fact that I ended things with Jase. Though you haven't even bothered to ask for my side of the break up story, instead you're choosing to think the worst of me I'm sure." She paused, sighing softly. "You're the one that made me promise we'd stay friends if things didn't work out with Jase, and yet you're the one making it hard to keep that promise right now." Shosh shrugged again. "Okay." She wasn't going to push to find out what their plans were for leaving, apparently they had thought everything through.
She wasn't and idiot, she recognized that body language. Crossing your arms was often a way of shutting someone out, or getting defensive. God, Shosh wanted to shout at her when Adrienne finally spoke again. "Well, maybe I was defending him because I don't think he was being unfriendly. Think what you want, I am annoying though and Cody wasn't out of line when he pointed that fact out to you. I don't know why you think he was 'unfriendly' to you. The Cody I know though, he doesn't do anything without a damn good reason behind it." Didn't even fight with her without a damn good reason, and so what if that made her feel the need to defend him. He might be a thorn in her side most of the time, but he was practically family - and knew her better than ninety percent of the people in her life. "What are you trying to say with that comment, that I'm just another girl that befriended you to get to Jase?" God, if that was what Adrienne was saying Shosh was going to be pissed. She wasn't the sort of person that used people, and if Adrienne didn't realize that about her, well, she really didn't know her at all. "That's not the fucking case. Our friendship had nothing to do with Jase, though clearly now your feelings about the break up are affecting how you view our friendship." She wasn't going full on bitch yet, but she was steps away from it.
Adrienne sighed. "I don't know if I'd use the word upset," she muttered before raising her voice slightly. "I'm protective of Jase, I always have been, Shosh. You know that. And yeah, he said it was amicable..." She trailed off slightly, giving herself a shake. She wouldn't tell Shosh how broken Jase was over the situation. "What's your side then?" she asked quietly.
"I was prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt," Adrienne started, then stopped, rolling her eyes. Some guy she'd met once wasn't worth this to her. "Look. Like I said, he didn't make the best first impression on me, but who the fuck cares?" She rarely cursed, but she was upset. She didn't have to like this guy, she'd probably never even see him again and she didn't know why Shosh was making such a big deal about it.
"I don't fucking know anymore, Shosh. I didn't think so, but fuck. I come to meet with you and you pick a fight about some guy I've met once? The same guy that you've said, on more than one occasion, is a pain? It just doesn't make sense to me." It didn't, it really didn't. And she hoped to God that Shosh wasn't like those women, that now that she was older, she could tell who was just using her to get to Jase. It wasn't like he was the star football player anymore, on the fast track to being rich and famous. And she wanted to take Shosh's word for it, but did Shosh even want to try to salvage their friendship?
Shosh didn't catch whatever it was that was muttered, and clearly Adrienne didn't feel like she should hear it so Shosh wasn't going to ask about it either. "I know you're protective of him, Adrienne. Doesn't give you the right to be so fucking passive aggressive with me, it's not like I cheated on him or something. We just didn't work out." She tried to keep her tone even as she spoke. "Would it really matter? You just said yourself that you're protective of Jase, so do you really want to hear my side of things? Will it really have any effect on how you feel?" She asked honestly.
"I was just curious." Shosh remarked, shrugging and pretty much done with this conversation. "Yeah, well I might be picking a fight in your opinion. Look, I might say Cody's a pain in the ass, but he's family pretty much. So it's kind of like if someone came walking in and starting saying shit about Jase, you'd be annoyed. It's a family thing, you can say whatever shit you want about Jase, but if someone else starting in on him you'd be pissed. Might not make sense to you, but maybe I'm picking fights because you came in here with a passive aggressive air about you." She wasn't going to hold back, it was clear this conversation wasn't going well. "And if you even thought I was like one of those women who used you to get to Jase, well, maybe you really don't know me at all." Shosh wasn't ending this friendship, but she was definitely hurt that although Adrienne said that nothing between Shosh and Jase would affect their own friendship, it was, and Shosh wasn't even sure if Adrienne could see that her own behavior was the reason they were arguing right now.
"I won't know until I hear it," Adrienne countered, frowning again. Was this even worth it? For all intents and purposes, Adrienne was going to leave Texas with Colin. And damn it, she was taking Jase with her.
"All I said was that he didn't make the best first impression and wasn't the friendliest," Adrienne pointed out, frustrated. "If someone said that exact same thing about Jase? Especially if that person was a mutual friend? I wouldn't react like this." Hell, she'd been in that position before, actually. "And maybe I was a bit passive aggressive, but hell, Shosh. I'm still in shock, probably more so than Jase." She couldn't get the image of him sitting at the kitchen table nursing a cup of coffee and looking broken out of her mind. "I didn't expect for this..." She gestured between them. "But I didn't expect him to start falling in love with you either," she finished softly. And sure, she knew that Jase hadn't said as much to Shosh or hell, even herself, but... somebody needed to say it.
She paused, then opened up a little. "Shosh, you've been my closest friend outside of Jase and Colin these past few months. I apologize for however I offended you." She realized her language was stiff but it couldn't be helped. "Maybe... Maybe it would be best if it ends here."
What was the point? Shosh really didn't think giving her side would change Adrienne's mind, and really she didn't think she should put forth the effort to explain herself, she really didn't have to explain her actions. "Short version, I realized that at three months in I wasn't making the time for a relationship, and we weren't moving at the same speed anymore. I wanted slow, and Jase was moving fast." That was all Shosh was going to say about it.
"Maybe my reaction is fueled by the fact you came into this coffee shop with a chip on your shoulder about my break up with Jase, and Adrienne, you weren't very good at hiding that fact." Shosh practically snapped at Adrienne, going on her guard yet again. "A bit? You had a fucking sign above your head that read 'Passive Aggressive'. Fine, you're in shock." She bit her tongue before making some comment about how Adrienne really shouldn't get involved with other peoples relationships, even if Jase was her cousin. "So what you're telling me is that we could have stayed friends if Jase hadn't fallen for me. That's not my fault, and I shouldn't be turned into the villain for breaking up with Jase instead of staying in a relationship that wasn't working." Shosh made a frustrated noise, wondering if Adrienne was just trying to guilt her with the information that Jase had been falling for her. "I'm sorry, I am. But wouldn't I have been more of a heartless bitch to stay with him when I knew I couldn't return whatever feelings he had for me...." She really did think she had done what was best for both of them, even if she was the only person who felt that way.
She listened to Adrienne talk, shifting to the edge of her chair and seconds away from pushing away from the table. "However you offended me? You really don't fucking get it? You came in here with a chip on your shoulder, you accuse me of befriending you to get to Jase, and there you sit wanting to act like you have no idea why I would be offended or upset?" Shosh knew she was in full on bitch mode now. "Maybe that would be the best, since clearly our friendship really couldn't withstand Jase and I breaking up. You know what, I really did think you meant it when you said that whatever happened between Jase and I wouldn't affect our friendship, clearly I was an idiot for believing that you were telling the truth." Shosh pushed away from the table and rose from her chair at that point. "I really am sorry that you couldn't see past your own shock to keep this friendship, Adrienne. I hope your move goes well." With that Shosh turned on her heels and leave the coffee shop, not looking back even once.
"Good, look forward to it." Shosh said. She wasn't counting on things every being comfortable between her and Adrienne again. Clearly her friend had picked a side, and Jase was family, it made sense.
