Astrid could hardly believe she was still awake after her last class, but it least it had been her last class for the week. Sure, there was homework and all that crap that she had to get to at some point, but right now she was dying to get out and do something. She'd immediately thought of Maureen and gotten excited. That was a woman who needed a night out, if she'd ever seen one. Not to mention, no one she'd met at school so far had been half as interesting, and having someone older around could be useful in a pinch.

She'd tried calling Maureen's cell, but it had gone to voicemail. She took that to mean the woman was either in class or at work. Since it was lunch and she was hungry, she decided to chance stopping by the Sunshine Diner to check. It wasn't ideal, but she'd been meaning to stop by, so she'd find something to eat, even if it was just a salad.

Of course, by the time she got there, it was packed. It took effort not to roll her eyes as she scanned the dining room, looking for a place. Smelly-looking old man, family of five crowded around one table, youngish red-haired girl...yeah, that was an easy pick. She strode up to the table.

"Excuse me," she said, putting on her best smile. "Any chance I can steal this seat? I don't bite, I swear."

When Marie heard a voice address her she looked up from her menu. "No problem," she said smiling at the short blond girl. She looked nice enough and Marie would hate to make her wait around when she had plenty of space. The girl looked to be around her own age, if not a little younger. Maybe she went to TCU. "I'm Marie, by the way."

Astrid glanced down at the chair to make sure there weren't any crumbs or anything sticky--everything looked pretty clean, but it was hit or miss with these places sometimes--and then took a seat across from the girl. "Astrid," she said automatically, reaching for one of the menus. "What's good here? It's my first time."

"Always best to check during the lunch rush," Marie said, smiling in amusement when she saw the blond check the seats. "Nice to meet you." She continued looking at the menu until Astrid asked her what was good. "This is only my second time here actually," Marie admitted. "I had the french toast with strawberry toppings last time and that was delicious. Not sure what is good for lunch though."

Astrid scanned the menu and nearly snorted when she laughed at the other's menu choice. French toast, cinnamon rolls...either she'd starve to death or gain a thousand pounds. Neither sounded like a good option. "Don't Texans believe in fish that isn't fried?" she said with a sigh, setting the menu on the table again. "Or vegetables that aren't starch?"

This wasn't L.A. She hardly even needed to remind herself of that any more. Her budget--stash of hidden cash or not--didn't allow for the expensive places that might serve what she preferred. God. Why couldn't they have at least sent her to college in Texas with one credit card?

Marie somehow managed to contain her laughter at the other girls obvious disgust. Normally she wouldn't have, but Astrid was clearly not having fun adjusting to Texas and Marie didn't want to make her feel awkward. "This definitely isn't the place to go for that," she said, smiling. "There is a really good Chinese restaurant around here though. It's a bit of a hole in the wall kinda place, but the food is great. And they don't use a lot of grease so it's pretty healthy." Astrid didn't strike her as the kind of girl who eat in establishments that could be categorized as 'hole in the wall,' but the food was so worth it. Marie had stumbled upon it earlier in the week and was in love with the place.

She put her menu down before continuing. "So where'd you move from?"

"What I'd kill for is some good sushi," Astrid said, glancing over at the front counter. She didn't expect to see Maureen out front, but if she did catch her, she'd have an excuse. Or she could at least ask the woman what she could order.

But no luck. She turned back to her table companion. "I just transferred from UCLA to UTA."

"There's a pretty good sushi place on Sundance Sqaure you should check out sometime then," Marie said. There were a couple of places that she liked better but, once again, they were a bit more hole in the wall-esque.

"Wow," Marie said, confused as to why anyone would transfer from UCLA to UTA. Not to say that UTA was a bad school or anything, but there was a reason that Marie had only taken her core there and wanted her degree from UNT. "That's a big of a change. You don't like it much here, do yah?" Astrid looked every bit like a disgusted LA girl who hadn't known what she wandered in to. She wondered if Astrid was like that with Texas as a whole, or just diners.

"Oh yeah?" Astrid said, her interest piqued at that. She pulled out her phone and typed in sundance square sushi, then let it search for a moment. When it popped up, she saved the item and nodded, putting her phone away again. "That'll be going in the GPS, then."

She didn't roll her eyes at the other girl's comment, but she really, really wanted to. Only a desire not to piss someone off in Maureen's workplace kept it back. "I like it better if that sushi place turns out to be good. School's pretty much school."

"Yeah," Marie said, as she watched Astrid rapidly type something out on her phone. "It's pretty good." Though Marie personally liked Tokyo Cafe down Pershing Avenue better, she thought Astrid would probably like Piranha better.

When Astrid commented on her transfer to UTA, Marie had to suppress the desire to laugh. She didn't want to be rude but the fact that anyone could say that in regards to UCLA was kind of hilarious. Astrid obviously didn't care about school if that was how she felt about it.

Another thing that was obvious to Marie was that Astrid was being a little snobby. Maybe she had been having a bad day or something, Marie tried to think nicely. Adjusting to a new city can be tough, as Marie well knew, and her dad had always taught her not to be judgmental of other people. "I actually took a couple of classes at UTA during the summer. It's a nice campus, even though it's kinda small," Marie said in an attempt to keep the conversation going.

"Yeah, it's not bad. A lot easier to find my way around than UCLA." She didn't really want to talk about school, but she reminded herself that it was better than going home. She should at least make conversation. "Not as much to do, though."

The waitress came by and Astrid ordered a water, then debated another half second. Screw it, she thought, and ordered a caesar salad, dressing on the side. She hoped it wasn't possible to OD on lettuce, because if it was, she was well on her way.

"If you're looking for clubs or something you should probably check out what they have in Dallas or around West 7th in Fort Worth." Marie was more of a stay at home with a good book kind of girl, but she knew that a lot of people weren't like that. She couldn't really give specific locations but she could at least try to be helpful.

When the waitress cam by, Marie ordered some coffee and the cinnamon raisin french toast. Even though it was lunch, Marie could never really pass up the 24 hour breakfast menu. Besides, she thought would be kind of funny seeing the french toast come out next to a caesar salad. Why anyone one would bother eating out if they were just going to have a salad was beyond her mental grasp. To each their own, I guess, Marie thought. "So, when did you move here?"

"Oh, believe me," she said with a bit of a laugh. "I'm keeping a list of potential places." She tapped her phone, where she'd just entered the sushi place. Art museums, clubs, restaurants, gyms...pretty much anything she heard the people around her mention. She was sure plenty of them would be crap, but she had to start somewhere. "Everything's just so...scattered."

Astrid took a drink of her water, squeezed her lemon a bit more, then took another. "About two weeks ago." God, how had it been so long already? Two long, miserable weeks.
