Demi smiled softly at Jasper, reaching for his hand and giving it a small squeeze of understanding when he didn't give her their traditional hello kiss. "Hey, Jasp," she said quietly, worrying her lip between her teeth. God, she loved him, and these next few moments could make or break them.
Taking a small breath, she dropped his hand and turned slightly so that she was facing Abby. "Hi, Abby. I'm Demi," her voice was near a whisper, and she knelt down until she was eye level with the child. "I'm really glad to meet you, sweetie." God, Abby looked so much like Jasper and Demi felt a tug from low in her gut as she glanced back up at him. He had a child now, would he even want more? She blinked rapidly, refusing to cry. It was one thing for Abby to exist, it was another to have her right in front of her, and oh, Demi wanted that family.
She won the war on her emotions in a matter of moments and she hoped to God that neither had noticed her momentary lapse of control. "May I hug you?" she asked Abby softly, not wanting to overstep any invisible boundary.
Jasper smiled and squeezed her hand back, relieved that she didn't seem upset by the lack of usual greeting. He couldn't help but wonder how long it would be before it would be appropriate for him to greet Demi with a kiss in front of Abby. Was there even a rule on that? He wasn't even sure who he should ask.
Jasper's heart was pounding so loud in his chest, he thought it was a miracle the girls couldn't hear it. He smiled reassuringly as Demi glanced back up at him. He wished he knew what she was thinking, wished there was something he could say or do to reassure her.
Abby chewed on her lip as Demi knelt down, though that was kind of nice. She didn't mind having to look up to talk to grown ups so much, but it was always nice when they would come down to her level. Abby nodded at Demi's question, taking a step forward and giving her a hug without waiting for Demi to do it herself. Her little hands felt the braid, and she pulled back. "Mommy used to braid my hair, and Gamma does sometimes, too. Did your Mommy braid your hair?" she asked, rocking back on her heels and up on the balls of her feet.
Demi held Abby close until she pulled back. "Oh!" She smiled slightly. "Not this time, but my Mommy and my big sister taught me how to do it myself." She ran her hand lightly across Abby's ponytail. "Want me to braid yours?" she asked softly.
God, Abby was beautiful and Demi hoped that this was going okay. She thought it was. It wasn't that she didn't like kids - loved them actually, it was just so much more nerve-wracking when it was your boyfriend's previously unknown daughter. She stood back up, starting to reach for Jasper's hand and then stopping herself halfway as she reminded herself that Abby probably wouldn't want to see them being demonstrative. She really didn't want to offend Abby in any way.
"Oooooh," Abby said, eyes wide as she tilted her head just a little. She couldn't imagine doing it herself; Demi must be really smart. "My Mommy died, so she can't ever teach me," she whispered softly, her eyes shining just a little. She didn't like thinking about all the things her Mommy wouldn't be able to do. Nodding, Abby said, "Uh huh. I mean... Yes, please."
Abby grabbed the hand that Demi had started reaching out toward Jasper and started tugging her further into the apartment. "Gamma bought me a new purse, and I have a brush and a mirror and my lip gloss and sparkly blue nail polish, but Gamma says I have to make sure it's always closed real tight, and you could maybe use the brush, right?" Mommy always brushed her hair first, but maybe Demi did it different. She plucked her purse from the little table on the way and took her brush out of it ad holding it out to Demi.
Jasper followed the girls into the living room, that tightness in his chest loosening just a little. He really shouldn't have been so worried - Abby was an incredibly friendly kid. Leanne had told him as much, and he'd even seen it first hand when he'd gone down to meet her the first time. And Demi... Well, Demi was incredible, and he was struck again with the fact that she was going to be an incredible Mom.
Demi felt her heart clench. As much as she hated Jessica for keeping Abby from Jasper, Abby couldn't be blamed for her Momma's issues. "I'm sorry, sweetie," she whispered, pulling Abby close again as she blinked away her own tears. She was near saying she would teach Abby herself, but bit the words back. Lines, Demeter, she reminded herself. There were boundaries she couldn't step over.
She took the brush from Abby, smiling slightly at the babble. "Of course I can use the brush, Abs. And your Gamma's right, make sure it's closed tight, or else it's gonna ruin your very pretty purse." She sat down on the couch, perching Abby on her knee like her own mother had done so many years ago. Running the brush through Abby's hair after taking down her ponytail, Demi kept up their light chatter. "Do you like staying with Gamma?"
Abby went into the hug willingly. She liked hugs a lot, and Demi seemed to give pretty good hugs, and maybe that meant Demi liked her, and so Daddy wouldn't send her away. She'd wanted to know her Daddy for a long time, and now that she couldn't have her Mommy anymore, she just wanted her Daddy.
Abby nodded seriously when Demi echoed the reminder to keep the nail polish closed tight. "I will," she said solemnly. It was a very big responsibility, having her very own purse, and she wasn't going to mess it up! She nodded at Demi's question, but stopped abruptly when she remembered that she wasn't supposed to move her head when someone was doing her hair. She tried to sit very still then, not even whining when her hair tugged from Demi getting the knots out of it. "Yeah, Gamma is awesome, but..." Abby paused and chewed on her lower lip for a second before continuing. "She says I might get to stay with Daddy." Her tone was hopeful.
Demi smiled a little when Abby tried to hold still. "You can move, I'm pretty good at this, sweetheart," she murmured, making sure to place a hand on the top of Abby's head, holding the hair in place as she worked on a snarl close to the end.
She smiled again at the hopeful voice, eyes glancing up and locking with Jasper's across the room. "Would you like that?" she prompted. "I'm sure your Daddy would love to have you stay with him." She knew it actually, he'd told her as much. And Abby... even from just these few minutes together, Demi could tell that she would fall head over heels for child.
"But Mommy always says I have to stay really still," Abby disagreed. And she was gonna stay as still as she could, cause she wanted Demi to like her and that meant she had to be really good, because if Demi didn't like her maybe Daddy wouldn't want her to stay. But Demi really was good at getting the tangles out, so staying still wasn't too hard at all, though she couldn't seem to stop her legs from swaying back and forth.
Abby nodded, bouncing just a little when Demi said she thought Daddy would want her to stay. She hoped he would. "I always wanted to know Daddy, but Mommy always said I had to wait, but after Mommy died, Gamma said I don't have to wait anymore, and we live here now so I get to see Daddy all the time," she rambled.
Jasper had no words for what he was feeling at that moment, watching Demi and Abby together like this. It truly was everything he'd hoped for and more, and he could see their life, their future - more days, more moments like this, and he wanted it, wanted it more than anything else.
Demi smiled softly, smoothing her hand over the freshly brushed hair. "Okay. You stay as still as you can, but it's okay to move if you need to," she murmured, starting to braid Abby's hair.
She laughed at the bouncing and then sobered as Abby talked about her mother. "You do get to see Daddy whenever you want now," she finally decided to say, choosing not to touch on the subject of Jessica. As delightful as Abby was, a part of her would always resent Jessica for keeping the secret from Jasper.
Wrapping the band around the end of Abby's hair, she smiled and gave it a small tug. "There you go, all done!" she announced, glancing over at Jasper again. God, she wanted this, this family. This moment, she wanted to frame it and remember it forever.
