Ruth yawned, jaw crackling, as she looked down on Marianne, who was drifting off in the middle of nursing. She carefully disengaged her, readjusting her clothing, and set her in the crib next to her glider. Max had helped her get the small nursery set up, with pale yellow walls, a Noah's Ark trim around the top of the room, and the necessary furniture assembled. She had been home for a few hours, and all she wanted to do was sleep, but she needed to tidy up a bit. Josh had hovered so much during her last few weeks she thought she might end up with visitors sooner rather than later.
Thankfully, Max had run her soiled bedding through the wash for her, and she was able to slowly make the bed, sitting on it with a sigh. So much had changed. All her internal focus on the baby was now going outwards. Things she hadn't realized would change, like her hearing every little cry no matter how exhausted she was. She'd have to start drinking stronger tea or coffee even to try and get her energy back.
There was a knock at the door, and she quickly checked her appearance in the vanity mirror (pale skin, bags under her eyes, urgh), and made her way out, hoping Marianne wouldn't wake.
She smiled as she opened the door. "Hello."
