Erica was pretty much in full depression mode. Life felt so completely hopeless, and what was the damn point, anyway? She'd tried so hard for so damn long to be successful and productive, and for what? To have everything fall apart because she'd let some stupid woman who meant nothing to her get in her head?
She'd been irritated with herself on Tuesday, but she'd had a focus because she'd still had a job. But once she'd got that phone call from Mel on Wednesday, she just lost it. What the hell was she supposed to do now? She couldn't even walk without those damn crutches, and even though rationally she knew that it would only be that way for a couple weeks, she just couldn't see past it. She had no job, she wasn't sure how long her savings would last, and how the hell was she supposed to pay her bills now? She couldn't really go out and look for a new job, because really, who was going to hire a girl on crutches?
She wasn't sure where her phone was. She seemed to remember throwing it against a wall, so maybe it was behind the television or a table or something, but she couldn't be bothered to find it. Not that it mattered, because who was going to call her, anyway? She'd spent most of the past two and a half days in bed, only bothering to get up to go to the bathroom or get some food to pick at because she'd mostly lost her appetite.
Erica was still in bed, hugging her pillow and staring blankly at the wall, when the knock sounded at her door. She buried her head in her pillow, debating just ignoring it, but when she heard Demi's voice on the other side of the wall, she knew she couldn't. She rolled over so that she was sitting on the side of the bed. Grabbing her crutches, she leveled herself up and hobbled out of her room and to the front door. She bit her lip before opening it, not even realizing that she looked terrible and probably smelled worse.
"Hey, Dems," she said softly, her voice cracking just a bit.
