Washing dishes wasn’t a fun job, but it was a job, Kyle thought. And Alex was a decent guy, a good boss. And it was a good task to do when he needed to think. It had been a hard decision, deciding that Ezra would be better off without him - not just for while his parents were here, but for good. But after some serious thought, he knew what he had to do - leave.
The apartment Alex had offered up was out. First place Ezra would check would be his job. But he had other options. Lots of other options, actually, he realized as he started compiling a mental list and weighing the pros and cons.
The Youth Center was the most obvious choice, perhaps a little too obvious. He was sure that that’s where Ezra would look first after coming to the Abbey. And he needed to make sure he had at least Saturday off. Friday wasn’t a big deal, Ezra wouldn’t think anything of it if he had to work the day his parents flew in. And Friday night, he typically worked closed any way so Ezra wouldn’t think much of him not being there when Ezra fell asleep.
So many details to consider. Okay, so the Janus Center was out, Demi was a possibility but he had a feeling she would take one look at him and call Ezra. He finished washing a glass and set it aside, thoughts disrupted for a moment when he spotted Derrick out of the corner of his eye. Huh. He had his address, knew Derrick wouldn’t kick him to the curb, knew Derrick knew the situation.... It had high potential for a place to hide for a couple of days. Just until Ezra gave up. He couldn’t imagine Ezra looking for him long, not with his parents there. Ez would be better off without him, he had to keep reminding himself of that.
He leaned forward, closer to the steam from the hot water as his eyes started tearing up. Best thing that had ever happened to him and he was going to give it up without a fight because Ezra deserved more. He wiped at his eyes quickly, shoving the thought aside. Plan, a plan. Okay. They fly in Friday morning. He could say he was pulling a double-shift, not a problem. He’d done it before. Maybe text Erica, asking her to go over to the house Saturday night? He nodded to himself. That would work. Ezra would find his note sometime Friday, would hopefully understand his reasoning and why he was doing this.
He’d have to pack light. Work clothes. Leave the stuff from shopping there. His breath hitched. Leave his sketchbook there. He wouldn’t need it anymore. He had a feeling he wouldn’t want to draw any way. He’d have to pack ahead of time, stash it somewhere. So he couldn’t take anything that would be missed. He might be able to snag one of Ezra’s button downs though. He shook his head. No, not a good idea. Cut all ties, Kyle.
And Ezra would hopefully listen to his request. He knew that Ez had said he’d come after him, that he had basically begged Ezra to come after him a couple of weeks ago but... maybe if Kyle asked him not to, he wouldn’t. Maybe he could leave more than a note. He might be able to get his hands on a video camera, give Ez a little something more tangible for a goodbye. Maybe then Ez would listen.
He nodded to himself. That’s what he’d do then. Make an excuse, leave a message, text Erica and go to Derrick’s. And pray that Ezra wouldn’t come to Angel Abbey and make a scene. Because he knew if he saw Ezra in person, he’d fold like a house of cards in a stiff wind and go back, and Ezra was going to be so much better off without him. Ez would be able to live a normal life, with a girl and a family that accepted him. No need to make problems with his parents. None at all.
Kyle wiped at his eyes again, glaring down at the plate in his hands. He wasn’t going back to the way it was before, he reminded himself. It was simply going a different path. He was going to be fine. Hopefully.
