In order to do something nice for Rico's birthday on Wednesday, Brendon had switched days with a happily accommodating Courtney. Of course the days he had switched were Wednesday and Saturday. He still despised karaoke with everything that he was but after coming to terms with his childhood, it wasn't as painful as it once had been.
In all respect, he was lucky to have a job that he loved and lucky to have the business that he did, even with the economy being down in the dumps. It was all a matter of perspective and as days went on, he found his perspective changing. Whether it was the time he spent every day writing or the time he spent away from the bar and with Rico that was accounting for this change, he wasn't sure. Whatever it was -- he was thankful for it. He still found himself at the gym on many nights but he didn't feel so out of touch with life as he may have this time last year.
The surprise birthday dinner had gone well with Rico. It had been nice doing something nice for him after everything that Rico had unknowingly or knowingly done for him. Even if they never amounted to anything other than friends, Brendon was okay with that. It was, even at the very least, great to have his friendship and someone he felt close to.
Brendon shook his head and took a long drink from his water. He looked around making sure everyone was still doing good before returning his attention to the pad of paper he had in front of him.
