It was way too hot. Luke hadn't realized how accustomed he'd become to the weather in New York until he'd come back south to live, but it wasn't the only thing he'd put out of his mind since leaving. It felt like summer already, and he couldn't imagine it getting much hotter though he knew it would. Though at least Texas didn't get as humid as Alabama did. He still remembered how sweltering that trailer would get with nothing but a rickety fan or the fridge to keep cool. As long as the power bill had been paid.
He'd decided to eat outside today to see if it felt better than inside the library, but he was starting to regret the decision. He was already missing his spot in the break room that was right underneath the AC vent.
Still, the sun was nice, at least from his current spot on a bench with a tree for shade. He unwrapped the sandwich he'd brought, then pulled a paperback out of his pocket, just small enough to fit. Since talking to Kudzu he'd been trying to read more poetry and see if any spoke to him. It was a good month for it, anyway.
