Being distracted at work with a patient in active labor was not a good thing. She knew exactly what was distracting her. Her current patient was only 4 cm dilated and 70% effaced. It was her first baby, so Marisel felt fairly confident that she had some time to relieve herself of that distraction. She spoke to the nurse there, making sure he had her cell phone number in case things progressed more quickly.
It'd been a week and a half since she'd done her 2-month postpartum check up on the baby girl and her mother. The new mother was adapting well to motherhood, but when she'd heard the baby cough, Marisel knew immediately what that sound meant. Pertussis. Only 2-months old and the poor baby was coughing, vomiting and constantly crying because of it. The mother had assumed it was colic. Marisel had referred her to a pediatrician at JPS, treating the infant was beyond her scope.
Almost 2 weeks later and she couldn't stop thinking of the poor infant. Marisel knew she'd advised the parents to get a vaccine before the baby was born. She sighed as she walked out of the elevator and walked towards the doctor's office. Dr. Gardner. Marisel had spoken to him in passing about work, so she hoped he wouldn't mind this intrusion. Pausing a moment, she knocked on his door, hoping he was in his office.
