He hadn't called ahead. Honestly, he hadn't even been sure where he was going. When he got in his truck, his initial goal was to go somewhere quiet where he could read or write something under a tree. When he'd gotten underway and through his second cigarette, he realized that he was already halfway to Chris' place. What he needed right then was someone with whom he had an utterly simple relationship. Chris was always direct with him and never gave out a drop more sympathy than was warranted. Maybe other people wouldn't warm to that, but Kudzu found it soothing not to have to guess at what someone was thinking or feeling. It might help him contain his anger a little, so he was fit to be around others.
Maybe he should have called. He rang the door bell then rubbed at his forehead, he'd had a headache building right behind his left eye all morning. Of course he rubbed with one of his bandaged fingers by accident and hissed as he accidentally pressed on the burn. What a mess he was today.
