Lilah’s new boyfriend seemed to understand the situation. It had taken a man to man talk last weekend, but Will was glad to see that Mike hadn’t behaved the same way today when he showed up for Sunday brunch. Will knew it couldn’t be easy to date a woman with two kids whose relationship with their father was quite like his relationship with Lilah, so he’d taken the time to talk to Mike instead of simply pushing him out of Lilah’s life. Once the man understood that Will saw Lilah more as a sister now and that getting involved with her basically meant accepting Will or not being part of her life, he’d stopped the glares and snide comments and attitude.

It was good because Lilah seemed to really like the guy for some reason, and Will hadn’t wanted to deal with the trouble of getting rid of him. He would have, and still would, if the guy tried to interfere with his relationship with his kids, but Connor and Chloe didn’t seem to mind Mike and were thrilled to see Will when he showed up for their weekly brunch, so he was in a forgiving mood. After spending his morning with the kids, Will dropped them off at home, had a brief chat with Lilah about their schedules for the upcoming week, and made plans to pick the kids up after school and take them to dinner on Wednesday.

There was still an adjustment to not having them living with him full-time. It had been over a year since they all moved to Texas for Lilah’s job, so he should have gotten used to it by now, but it was still weird giving them hugs and kisses before driving away and leaving them there. It was going to be even stranger whenever Lilah finally did find a guy she wanted to commit with, whether it was marrying him or just living together, because there’d be elements of the twins’ lives that the guy had control over that should belong to a father. Will knew that it couldn’t hurt them to have another paternal influence, of course, but they were his kids, and he’d done everything he could since they were born to make sure they were taken care of and loved. It was one area of his life where he did feel somewhat possessive and he figured it was better to work through the jealousy now instead of waiting for it to happen and letting it become some obstacle in his life.

Of course, thinking about it and wondering if Mike was going to be that guy, now that he was having sleepovers and participating in their Sunday brunch ritual had Will feeling agitated and restless. He knew what to do when he felt like that, at least, and he drove a few blocks from Lilah’s house to Serenity, where he knew he’d be able to let off some steam before making the drive back out to his ranch. He planned to ride Bandit later, and he might start working on that broken fence if he was still in need of physical distraction.

He loved having land and property to himself, which surprised him considering how close his neighbors had been and how crowded everything was in Santa Monica and what he could remember about living in Philadelphia had always been crowds and no space. Houston hadn’t been so bad, except the trailer park was always full and everyone had known everyone else’s business. Here, though, he had a gorgeous house and land with room for his horses and a barn. It wasn’t a working ranch, but it still made him feel like he was a bit of a cowboy, even if he was just playing at it. He had a real hat and boots now, not just part of a costume he’d worn more than a few times in the past when he really had been playing at being a cowboy.

Serenity was bustling with activity, which he’d noticed was common on Sundays. He tried to stop by the gym anytime he came over to see the kids, because he liked running outside and getting a workout from manual labor but there was something good about hitting the gym, too, and using this place meant he got to people watch, too, which was an improvement over his personal gym at home. He liked watching people, especially when they were sweaty and glistening from a good workout. After changing into a pair of shorts and tank top, he grabbed a towel from his gym bag, locked the bag up, turned on his Ipod, and headed to the weights. It was time to sweat.
