It had been a long time since Kudzu had cooked for someone other then himself, but when he was still living at home it was part of his daily routine. He'd make lunch for his father every day, something filling that would get them through the afternoon of hard work or study. He'd learned at the feet of his Aunties, all of them good cooks in their own right. Auntie Rosie though had taught him the most with her secret spices and winking eyes.
He knew that Chris was a crazy good chef, but Kudzu figured that even chefs must get sick of their own cooking once and a while. Hell, sometimes he'd start making himself dinner and not want to it by the time he was done even thought it was good food. So on a whim, he'd called Chris today and warned him that he'd be bringing over lunch. He really liked Chris, liked his practicality and bluntness. Kudzu so often felt lost by the signals other people were throwing out it, it did him good to spend time with someone that was clear about what they wanted.
Flipping through the few handwritten cards he'd brought with him in the move, he decided on Auntie Rosie's Spicy Roast Beef Po' Boy, well known as any who came to her cafe as the Thursday Special. He hoped she wouldn't mind him making it on a Saturday. It felt a little sacrilegious. He'd got the meat simmering in the crockpot on high all morning, adding spices as needed. When he deemed it good, he spooned meat with most of it's gravy into a large tupperware container then sliced dill pickles into a baggie. On his way to Chris' house, he stopped by a bakery and picked up two fresh French loaves, the make or break ingredient to any good po' boy. Back home he might have baked his own, but he didn't have the time these days.
Juggling his bags, he knocked on Chris' door, trying not to step on the basket someone had left on the stoop. It held empty clean tupperware and nicely done crayon sketch of the condo. Weird.
