Date: January 14, 2011 Characters: Max Stuart, Jay Shaw Location: random bar, unspecified Status: Semi-Public, ping to play Summary: Max needs to get out more. Fortunately, Jay can help with that.. Completion: Complete
Jay shook his head as he walked out to Max's car. He opened the car door and slid in. "Dude, you are so lucky all of my neighbors go home for the evenings." It had been a good pain day and a great working day, and now he was happy to go out and have some fun. "Where we going?"
Max snorted. "You're lucky. I don't live here to listen to any complaining. "Figured one of the old haunts from my early construction days. Total dive, but there's no hordes of females waiting to descend like praying mantis's." He snickered. "You good for the night?" He referred obliquely to Jay's need for a cane.
Max drove over to the rougher area the bar was in, feeling himself oddly relax to return to old stomping grounds. He hoped it would distract from the worries that had begun to accumulate. Though really, hanging around with Jay was the best fix for that. The man was so laidback, Max didn't know how he did it.
Inside, it was dark, old-looking, and not a teenybopping female in sight. Max sighed with relief as they found a booth. Max ordered a beer and a shot of whiskey.
Jay ordered a shot of bourbon and a beer. "Working some, got some food shopping to do on Sunday after I close. Got a friend coming over for lunch on Tuesday, figured I'd cook. Other than that, just same old same old. What about you?"
Max was unable to keep his good news quiet. "Got a lead on a job. An interview, really." He grinned. "And old friend from construction connected me with a guy who needs a foreman on a house project. Have to see how it'll work out, but sounds like a good lead."
When his drink arrived he took a sip from the whiskey, feeling the burn going down. "And frankly, I need out of the house. Almost excited for college classes now."
Max nodded. "Me too. Not cause I need the money. Got the GI bill in my favor. I just need to keep busy." He and Ruth were in need of a little more distance.
"Hope so. Got Western Civ, which doesn't sound terribly exciting, but it counts no matter what I major in." And his mood dimmed a bit in the light of that particular problem hanging over his head.
"Gonna be a little rusty at first. Sore, at least. Been a while since I got into that kind of work full time."
"Busy is good. You hate being idle." Jay nodded, "Western CIv can be great. You just need a good teacher. Got all your books and stuff? Still undecided about the major?"
He sipped at his beer, "You'll get back into the hang of it. I know you will."
"Got the books, yeah. Class starts on Tuesday." Max huffed a sigh. "Haven't a flying fuck what to major in. Lots of things seem interesting, but nothing seems right." He shrugged.
"Gonna study at your place." He smirked. "Ali tends to see books as competition. He already got ahold of one of the paperbacks I had on my bookcase. It's got dried dog drool and teeth marks all over. Good thing it was a Heinlein book."
"Don't rush it. I mean they have people there who can help with that, right?" Jay commented. "Wait until something feels right. Follow your heart, dude, for that will lead you to the path of contentment."
Jay grinned, "You've got a key, go ahead. The dining room table is all yours." He winced slightly, "Poor Heinlein."
"Thanks, Confucius." Max saluted him with his beer bottle. "Some of us are prone to wander, you know. Hell, by the time you were my age, you had the store up and running."
"Eh, it wasn't good Heinlein. Think Ali has pretty discerning taste. He's left Ruth's classics alone." He grinned.
"More power to you." Max shrugged. "A lot of people look for work to achieve goals. Home, family. Got the home, don't want the family. So whatever goals I can conceive aren't terribly high-minded. Get a degree for work to afford play." At least, that's what it seemed like to him.
Max takes a long pull on the beer. He wasn't sure he was happy with himself. Not in going to school. Not in any of the plans he had. He'd gotten excited about the job because it was something to do, and he was good at it, but beyond that?
"So, what's the game schedule looking like for the next few weeks?" He asked, changing the subject. "You gonna want someone to sit the counter while you man the tables?"
